THE FRENCH TURF Judge Burke in the Daily America of January 16 gives the following account of a talk he had with jockey Henry who has just returned from Europe EuropeMilton Milton Henry chatted very entertainingly last eveningjwith the writer on the status of racing in France He will not go to California this winter having arranged to go back to France on the 18th of February on the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse The object of his trip is to see some old friends and to explain to Mr J R Keene the cause of his sever ¬ ing his connection with that gentlemans English stable Henry savs it would be no surprise to Mr William K Vanderbilts trainer Eddie Hughes if Ellesmere were to win the Derby He is exactly like Yankee except that he is brown was the way Henry described the Americanbred colt which was foaled in France There is every reason for the family resemblance both being by Hanover The starting is done by M Figes without any barrier the jockey said and no better work could possibly be seen Yet I believe that they are to try the bar ¬ rier there this year M Figes has the confidence of all the riders He has been acting in that capacity for abouttwentyfivey ears Henry is aid that Mr Vanderbilt has this year a splendid stable of two yearolds but under the French rules they will not race until after August 1 1Henry Henry will ride this year for Baron de Rothschild whose colors are those of his relative in England blue yellow cap the same colors carried to victory in the St Leger by Leopold de Rothschilds Dori cles M Ephrussie the barons soninlaw has only a small stable and Henry will have a better chance in the barons stable which is trained by an Eng ¬ lishman J C Watson For years the baron has been the leading French turfman in the matter of stakes won but this year he has not been so lucky Second call on Henrys services was given to Baron de Shickler Henry now weighs only 105 pounds and lias no difficulty in keeping down to weight The scale in France IE however heavier all round than in this country In one race in France Henry rode a horse called Codoman at 141 pounds The horse was unplaced the race was won by Mr Whit ¬ neys Kilmarnock but the going was heavy or the horse wouldhave had a chance Codoman is a big brown but rather an oddlpoking horse behind the saddle saddleHenry Henry mentions as a strange thing that horses horsesrunning running in France and no doubt also in England Englandare are compelled to wear heavier shoes than in inAmerica America the reason being that ordinary shoes shoesspread spread from concussion Ellesmere is game and anda a stayer added Henry Strangely enough Henry HenryrodeNasturtiumseveraltimes rodeNasturtiumseveraltimes when that colt was a yearling in the hands of Lewis Elmore who whotrained trained him for his then owners Messrs Follansbee nd Chanler Henry does not say that Nasturtium Nasturtiumkll have any difficulty in getting around Tatten kll Corner Any good jockey wide awake can jtiate it he says Some of the French courses i worse than Tattenham Corner to get around
