GOSSIP OF THE TURF Sam Bryant one of the oldest trainers and owners who has been a noted character on every race e course in the country for the last forty years is seriously ill at his home near Churchill Downs Bryant gained a national reputation in 1888 when he campaigned that grand twoyearold Proctor Knott and after winning all the best stakes at the spring meetings in the west went east and captured the Junior Champion and Futurity Stakes This was the first year for these two stakes and Bryant who was a partner of the Scoggan Brothers at that time won both of them with the sorrel gelding Proctor Knott that was said to be one of the grandest race horses over foaled in the west Proc tor Knott was foaled at the Jackson farm in Ten ¬ nessee Ho was by Luke Blackburn Talapoosa and Bryant paid 175 for him The two stakes alone were worth 75000 Sam Bryant is seventytwo years old and has led an active outdoor life and his iron constitution is all that keeps him alive He has never had any horses since the days of Proctor Knott that were of much class The same year that Proctor Knott was in his zenith or probably the year after a stable companion of the noted gelding Come to Taw was one of Bryants money getters He was a consistent colt and added many a purse to the stables large winnings Bryant was a close friend of the late A M Waddell one of the best known gamblers in the south Waddell always had con fidence in Bryants judgment of a thoroughbred and encouraged him in a financial way to buy these two colts that won for Bryant a fortune The following was handed down by the stewards at New Orleans yesterday We recommend that the further entry of the horse Hop Scotch be denied for the balance of this meeting meetingWe We recommend that the further entry of the horse Dr Moore bo denied until ho is in condition to race We recommend that the entry of the horse John Grigsby be denied hereafter on heavy or muddy track trackJockey Jockey Lindsay is fined 25 for reckless riding in the third race this date The conditions of the three stakes offered by the New Louisiana Jockey Club which are to be run at their spring meeting were made public yester day All have liberal added money and should receive heavy entries The are as follows The St Patrick Handicap 1OCO added To be run Monday March 17 1902 for threeyearolds and upward 5 to accompany the nomination 25 ad ditional to start The New Louisiana Jockey Club to add 1COO of which 2CO to second and 100 to third One mile and onesixteenth The Flight Handicap 1000 added To be run Thursday March 20 1902 for threeyearolds and upward 3 to accompany the nomination 25 ad ¬ ditional to start The New Louisiana Jokkey Club to add 1CCO of which 200 to second and 100 to the third Six furlongs furlongsThe The New Louisiana Stake 2000 added To bo run Saturday March 22 1902 a handicap for four yearolds and upward 10 to accompany the nomi nation 40 additional to start The New Louisi ana Jockey Club to add 2000 of which 300 to the second 2CO to the third Four miles The following is taken from the San Francisco Chronicle of January 24 John Condon arrived 1 from the east yesterday and is settled at Oakland 1 for the winter Condon is the biggest race track owner in America owning all of Harlem 20 per r cent of Worth a halfinterest in Lakeside and a i abaro of the new California Jockey Club track Although Condon is blind he supervises all his s business He is out here for pleasure Condon i takes a keen interest in the turf and has many papers Tead to him every day Previous to owning = race tracks Condon was a heavy bettor
