GOSSIP OF THE TURF B The first colt to be unloaded at Memphis Tenn from the palace horse cars which brought the two yearolds of William K Vanderbilt and Thomas McDowell from Lexington was AllanaDale Mc ¬ Dowells reliance for the western Derbies this year The crack colt stood the long trip without mishap as did the others which composed two car loads of horses arriving at Montgomery Park to be pre ¬ pared for the coming turf campaign McDowell stated that AllanaDale would carry his own colors in all of his engagements and not the Yanderbilt colors colorsW W H Laudemans horses including Harry New threeyearold candidate for the Tennessee Derby have arrived at Memphis They will be trained by P Dunne Alex Labold former President of the Oakley track at Cincinnatis at Memphis and says he intends entering the racing game again He has a small stable at Louisville and is looking for material to increase his string The entries to the stakes of the New Louisville Jockey Club closed last Saturday with an increase of 150 over last year Entries have been received from all the prominent horsemen in the west also some from the east among whom are William K Vanderbilt and Lucien Appleby This is the first time that these men have ever made entries in the west and from present indications the spring meet ¬ ing will be the best in the history of the local asso ¬ ciation ciationBelow Below will be found the number of entries to each stake Debutante Stakes 108 Bashford 108Bashford Manor Stakes 94 Juvenile 94Juvenile Stakes 109 Clark 109Clark Handicap 66 Frank 66Frank Fehr Selling Stakes 117 Bluegrass 117Bluegrass Stakes 78 Kentucky 78Kentucky Derby for 1903 137 Kentucky 137Kentucky Oaks for 1903 98 Nursery 98Nursery Stake for 1903 202 202The The best horses in the west are entered in the Clark Handicap This stakes takes the place of the old Clark Stakes which the public have been lead tdbeliev6wouldnotf bea iixturewith the Louis ¬ ville Jockey Club any more It is the intention of the association to maintain this stakes in commem ¬ oration of Col Clark ClarkThis This stakes has been made a handicap for the rea ¬ son that it would attract a higherclass field than if the conditions were the same as formerly as the winner of the Derby almost invariably won this stakes Jockey Burns may return to the scene of his many saddle triumphs during the twentyone days meet ¬ ing at Montgomery Park Memphis commencing March 31 Burns is under contract to W C Whit ¬ ney but his services will not be needed during the major part of the Memphis meeting Charles Elli ¬ son has invested in a number of high priced two yearolds which need the services of a finished horse pilot and Burns will be prevaled upon to handle them during their engagements there With Burns Bullman Lee Jackson Coburn J Woods and the other jockeys who will be at Mem ¬ phis from Frisco and New Orleans competition will be brisk for honors a part of the program which was lacking last year Burns has not been riding with much success this winter on the coast Few people in this country know that breeding of highclass thoroughbreds is going on in Ireland on a great scale One of the most fashionable young stallions of the day there is Gallinule by Isonomy and his book for 1903 is full at 1000 per mare while for 1904 it is almost full Gallinule is the sire of the Tragedy colt at Newmarket owned by Mr Fox hall Keene and who by all accounts is looming up as a dangerous colt for the classics It was only recently that Mr George Voorhees who had just returned from a trip to Newmarket said that of all the young stallions who were being talked about as likely to replace St Simon when he was called on to pay the debt of nature this stallion Gallinule was the most fancied by experts Entries for the stake events of the Arkansas Jockey Clubs spring meeting March 24 to 29 have been announced There will be three stake races with added money viz vizArkansas Arkansas Derby to bo run March 24 Capital Hotel Stakes March 27 and Bob Furth Stakes March 29 The noted broodmare Qnesal by Himyar dam of Tommy Atkins Maximo Gomez Trumpet and other winners has foaled a bay colt to Dr Mac Bride at the Hira Villa Stud of Major B G Thomas Lexing ¬ ton Ky At the Castloton Stud of James E Keone the 18600 broodmare Field Azure dam of several j good winners and a richly bred daughter of Ben dOr foaled a bay colt by Le Var son of Isonomy Both youngsters are valuable
