LATONIA FAVORED It is pleasing to note that the turfmen of the west have accorded to the recently closed stakes of the Latonia Jockey Club a measure of patronage that promises to replace the club in in its old time im ¬ portant place in the list of western racing organiza ¬ tions Encouraging signs of a revival of interest in racing at Cincinnati were not lacking last fall when the club gave its closing meeting of the year arid with such fine entries to serve as attractions it jeems probable that the cpmingsj ingmeetingwjll be so successful as to restore the club to well de ¬ served prosperity The entries received are greatly in excess of those of recent years being as follows Clipsetta Stakes twoyearold fillies five fur ¬ longs 89 Harold 89Harold Stakes twoyearold colts five furlongs 85 Cincinnati Trophy twoyearolds five and a half ahalf furlongs 102 Brewers 102Brewers Handicap threeyearolds and upward upwardsix six furlongs 83 Decoration 83Decoration Handicap threeyearolds and up ¬ ward one mile and a quarter 50 Merchants 50Merchants Selling Stakes threeyearolds and upward one mile 86 one mile 66 Latonia 66Latonia Derby 1903 1J 1JLatonia Latonia Oaks 1903 Total Commenting on this entry list one of the Cincin ¬ nati newspapers said Very interesting and par ¬ ticularly gratifying is a comparison of the entry lists for the coming meeting at Latonia with those of the two previous years Last year in addition to the Derby and Oake which are to be run this spring only four stakes were opened The Derby received 58 nominations and the Oaks 52 the Clipsetta closed with 56 and the Harold 65 The Cincinnati Hotel Stakes received only 42 and the Tobacco which is now the Merchants had but 56 In 1900 the Derby which was run last year closed with 78 and the Oaks with 48 The Clipsetta had 48 the Harold 44 the Covington Spring Selling Stakes 42 the Tobacco 67 and the Turf Congress Handicap 42
