GOSSIP OF THE TURF William C Whitney and Clarence H Mackay two of the most prominent turfmen in this country have decided to reserve a majority of their horses for the races at Saratoga this summer This fact became known a few days ago when orders were sent to John Rogers and Charley Hill the respect ¬ ive trainers for the millionaires to prepare only a few of the best horses for tne big events at New York The other horses are to bo sent to Saratoga where they will be entered in the various events which will be decided there Mr Mackay is not anxious to race his horses before the Saratoga meeting and has given trainer HilOnstructions to prepare only Heno and Banastar for the main events at Morris Park and Gravesend Similar tacticswill be adopted by Mr Whitney Two English thoroughbreds one of which was consigned to William C Whitney arrived Wednes ¬ day on the steamship Mesaba Their names are Catrina and St Symphorien Catrina is a mare purchased by Mr Whitney two years ago She is a full sister to Limosol winner of an English Oaks She is a chestnut mare by Poulet Queen of Cyprus by King Tom St Symphorien the owner of which conld not be learned is a half brother to the Derby winner St Gaticn Both horses will be retired for breeding purposes News comes from Nashville Tenn that Gon W H Jackson the noted breeder and proprietor of Belle Meade Stud is dangerously ill at Tampa Fla General Jackson went to Florida several weeks ago for his health Ho had been ailing for some weeks but his condition was not thought serious Proctor Knott winner of the first Futurity Tammany that won for Marcus Daly over 100000 in stakes Clif ¬ ford the rival of the noted Henry of Navarre and Tho Parader and scores of other noted horses were bred at Belle Meade Jackson was a noted con ¬ federate general He was never naturalized how ¬ ever as required by law to become an American citizen SThe San Francisco Chronicle has this to say of little Knapp who recently won a stake race on Frangible Once in a while a little fellow wins an ordinary purse race but it rarely happens that a midget like Knapp is able to pilot a winner in an important stake Knapp is one of the smallest boys riding on any American track and tho way he piloted Frangible to victory in the Palace Hotel Handicap on Saturday was a revelation He got his mount off in a good position and made such a hot pacq that tho favorites could not keep up during the first part of tho journey Many handicappers thought that Frangible had a great chance to win with 90 pounds in tho saddle but they were afraid that such a little fellow as Knapp could not do the horse justice He rode however like a veteran and his work recalled tho efforts of Johnny Reiff when he first camo to California Knapp promises to de ¬ velop into a first class jockey as he possesses game ness and more than ordinary aptitude for riding
