GOSSIP OF THE TUKF TUKFThrough Through the recommendation of P Dunne Charles Head Smith the Chicago Board of Trade man and former owner of Garry Hermann Lieuten ¬ ant Gibson and other illfated racers has engaged exjockey W Martin to train his stable of horses for the 1902 turf campaign Old Hutch a three yearold and a number of twoyearolds are included in the present Smith stable which will be reen ¬ forced by purchases which Martin says he will make P Dunne who rates Martin as the best American jockey that ever rode a race also holds a high opinion of him as a trainer If I am not mistaken Dunne says Martin will make a better trainer than he did a jockey He has brains and that is what is needed to prepare a colt for a race raceWill Will Wallace is said to have in charge what is be lieved to be a sensational twoyearold in his stable in the bay colt Thenader by Troubadour Miss Booker by Onondaga Wallace is making no secret of the fact that he considers him the best colt he ever trained though he owned and raced The Com ¬ moner and others of high class as twoyearolds Thenader belongs to Dr R M Bryan the well known veterinarian of Lexington Ky who is a newcomer in the racing business The colt will start at Memphis and Louisville and if fit will be sent east Alex Shields of the well known racing firm of Carruthers Shields arrived in San Francisco a few days ago with his daughter and is stopping at a private hotel Recently his health failed him and his doctor urged him to go to Southern California which he did He remained there several weeks and is now feeling better than at any time since he rwas taken sick Mr Shields will reside in San Francisco until he is entirely well after which he will go back and look after his horses which will be raced on the New York tracks next season Ner ¬ vous prostration is what impaired his health
