GOSSIP OF THE TCKF Concerning the fast approaching Bennings meet ¬ ing the New York Sun of last Monday said Two weeks from tomorrow the racing season will open in the east with the spring meeting of the Washington Jockey Club at Bennings Many horses that have been racing this winter at New Orleans and San Francisco will be seen at Ben ¬ nings together with racers now being trained at local tracks Judging from the list of entries the Washington meeting will be more interesting than ever before The recent heavy storms have made it a difficult matter to get the Bennings track in shape for early training gallops but it is hoped that fair weather will prevail during this week and next so that there may be no more drawbacks for the track superintendent The many improve ¬ ments begun last winter at Bennings including the now grand stand have been completed and the track will probably be pronounced one of the best appointed race courses in America The grand stand has had many improvements The betting ring has been widened its entire length so that crowding will be unusual unless on state occasions A iiGW field ijtriiul Iras beeaorected anditisso situated that every part of the track may be seen from it The club house secretarys office and jockeys room have all been lavishly equipped The allotment of weights for the Bennings Spring Handicaps has caused general satisfaction and some high class sport as a result is looked for Odom Burns Wonderly Cochran Lyne Shaw and other noted jockeys have engagements to ride at Bennings which is an indication that a number of the big stables will be represented representedSydney Sydney Paget and John J McCafferty have taken subscriptious in the Saratoga Special swelling the total to twentyfour one more than last year Their subscriptions which reached the Saratoga Associa ¬ tions offices several days ago were entirely unex ¬ pected and very much elated Secretary Harry K Knapp and his assistants assistantsMr Mr Pagets name has not appeared on a Metro ¬ politan program since 1899 when W C Whitneys horses were running in his name He got together a promising stable of young horses last summer by patronizing the yearling sales of the great southern and western breeding establishments and will cam ¬ paign them this summer with Mr Whitneys horses horsesThe The subscription of Mr McCaiTerty indicates that the Texas turfman has at Louisville a stronger band of twoyearolds than it was popularly sup ¬ posed he owned Mr McCallerty was a liberal purchaser at last summers sales but it was gener ¬ ally supposed last fall that his purchases had not turned out well McCaflerty is taking advantage of the propitious weather and is rapidly bringing his horses into shape at Churchill Downs He will arrivp in the east in time for the Aqueduct meeting with a wellseasoned outfit Exchange Johnny Lamle whose fame as a rider early in the nineties racegoers will readily recall announces that ha will both train and ride for the stable of Lamle fc Ham next season At present the stable occupies the old Beard quarters at the Brighton Beach track and comprises the following seven horses Mizpah b g 8 by Faverdale Amulet Lindsey Murray and The Beggar both threeyear olds Labor whose one race in W Lakelands name last year proved so great a disappointment to the rail birds McAnnu a fouryearold jnaidon by Dr MacBride Roma which has never faced the flag and two twoyearolds one a bay colt and the other a chestnut colt by Lazzaroue Lamle reports from sixty to seventy horses now stabled at the track In the stable of William Lakeland who has seventeen mainly twoyearolds he says there is some Tory highly thought of material He also esteems several in the string of Charley Oxx who has six in charge The threeyearold bay filly As ¬ cension by Ben Strome Adora is particularly for ¬ ward Morning Telegraph J B Haggin has received word from his Eancho del Paso Stud in California that the great mare Fireuzi by Glenelg has foaled a bay filly by Water ¬ cress the sire of Water Color and Nasturtium This filly is the first foal Firenzi has had by the Springfield stallion She is superbly bred Her maternal grand dam Florida was a full sister to Hindoo Margerique by Order Margerine has foaled a chestnut filly by Watercress a full sister to Nasturtium the champion twoyearold of last year and W C Whitneys English Derby candidate this season The Hanover Mollie L mare Ton gese a full sister to Ben Holladay has dropped at Elmendorf Stud a chestnut colt by Order This youngster is a full brother to the redoubtable High Order one of the best twoyearolds of the season of 1899 It is said by a Cincinnati newspaper that the Newport racetrack will hold a running meeting this spring The exact date of the opaning day will be announced in the near future It was thought by many that because Newport did not apply to the Western Jockey Club for dates that it meant that the gates would remain closed this season Another view was taken of the mattcrAnd that was that an outlaw meeting would be held with a foreign book Eecent developments show that both of the deduc ¬ tions were wrong Manager Fowler has right along insisted that a meeting would bo held over the Queen City course but refused to say anything further Even at the present time he adheres to this course but from other sources comes the in ¬ formation that the buying her at tho Daly closing out sale Brazil tho steeplechase jockey is making a move for reinstatement He has filed a sworn afhdavit setting forth that while Ellison and others made overtures to him in connection with job steeple ¬ chase races ho at all times refused to associate with them or have anything to do with them His 1 appeal will be considered by tho stewards
