GOSSIP OF THE TUBF George Odom the crack lightweight jockey is adding to his reputation as a knight of the pigskin by his splendid work in the saddle at New Orleans Odom went to the Crescent City merely to keep in training for his eastern engagements He received a severe fall last year which laid him up for several weeks and made him nervous and afraid of his work later on He has gotten over this nervousness and will take a chance with any of the boys Odoms superiority lies in his hand work and in his admirable seat in the saddle His services are in great demand by the eastern racing magnates chiefly because his reputation for integrity is of the thehighest highest Otto Wonderly J B Haggins 15000 jockey who wtth J H Carr has been spending some time at Hot Springs has left there for New York Won ¬ derly is reported as being in excellent condition and in a fair way to duplicate his success of last year when his triumphs at the end of the season enabled him to secure a contract such as no other jockey can boast of namely 15000 for second call on his services W C Whitneys crack filly Endurance by Right underwent such a great improvement yesterday that announcement came from the Whitney stable that she stands a good chance to recover sufficiently from her present illness to race again this year Dr Ryder who is treating the filly says that Endurance by Rights wonderful constitution has pulled her through a sickness that would have caused the demise of any other filly The crisis is now past the physician said Steeplechasing will be a feature of the next meet ing of the New Memphis Jockey Club according to the present intention of the local officials New jumps have recently been erected and at least three jumping races each week will be offered The Cotton Steeplechase Stakes with 1000 added closed with thirtythree nominations Jockey Lucien Lyne will be the premier pilot this season of the string of racers which Enoch Wishard is handling for John A Drake He is to report to trainer Wishard here April 1 and for his services daring the campaign of 1902 ho is to receive 6000 with the privilege of outside mounts when such mounts receive the approval of Wishard The string of Fizer Co including Bill Nixon winner of the Premier Stakes will go to Nashville from New Orleans and will be given a rest until the opening of the meeting at Cumberland Park O H Chonanlt of Spendthrift Stud has bought of R T Gibson seven head of thoroughbred mares and yearlings for a large private prico They in ¬ clude Bal Masque and Everglade Mr Cheuault has sold to M T Munsey of New York city the chestnut colt 2 by Russell Anna Garth by King Eric The price quoted is private but reported to be 2500 Judge Apperson of Little Rock and A B Dade of St Louis will be respectively the presiding judge and starter at the Nashville meeting Their ser ¬ vices were secured a day or two ago
