GOSSIP OF THE TURF In answer to an inquiry lately regarding his health Mr E J Baldwin spoke as follows Of course I am pretty well along in years but I think I am good for a number of years more yet My appetite is good and as soon as I get over this little spell Ill be all right again The secret of J6ng life is in taking good care of ones self selfIn In a little over a year Baldwin has transformed Santa Anita He has developed water installed primping plants and made all arrangements to se ¬ cure irrigation even in dry seasons During the present season Baldwin has sown 7000 acres to wheat and about 3000 acres to barley and other grain grainAlthough Although Baldwin makes much wine and brandy he takes the most interest in raising thoroughbred horses In the stud at Santa Anita still are such famous Derby winners as the Emperor of Norfolk and Eey el Santa Anita the former being 17 and the latter 11 years of age Both are the progenitors of many colts that have won distinction on the turf and each year increases the number and value of their get Baldwin considers his colt Cruzados at the present time the swiftest runner alive He is entered for this years American Derby DerbyAmericano Americano a full brother of Cruzados is deemed the most promising twoyearold colt in the Bald ¬ win stable He is entered for a number of races and is being trained with the expectation that he will be a record breaker The promise of the colt may be imagined when it is stated that Baldwin has been offered 12000 for him but he says he would not take 20000 20000Baldwin Baldwin owns at the present time about 300 thor ¬ oughbreds He will send east this year about four ¬ teen of the fleetest to participate in the big events of the year on the running turf Miracle II f rom Tichenor Cos stable set a new mark for the mile for the seasons work at Montgomery Park last Friday by negotiating the xoute in less than 145 The colt carried light weight but could have accomplished the work in faster time Word reached W H Fizer last Friday that a train on which his twoyearold Bill Nixon and the threeyearold Colonel Stone were being shipped to Nashville was caught in a cyclone while passing through Mississippi The train was stopped and the two horses removed from the car As a result of exposure both horses caught cold and it was reported Colonel Stone had died Later advices say this report was not correct but both horses are in a bad way
