EASTERN TUKF NEWS The New York Sun of Monday prints the foliow ¬ ing grist of turf items It was reported yesterday from Long Branch that Clarence H Mackays noted horse Banastar which is top weight in the Suburban Brooklyn and other big handicaps this year has broken down and may never race again According to the story cir ¬ culated among turfmen Banastars bad leg which put him out of training twice before has again gone back on him and ho will be permanently retired to the stud Last year after a good rest Banastar opened up with an impressive victory in the Metropolitan Handicap He was made a hot favorite for the Brooklyn Handicap but was badly cut down in the race and finished nowhere After that Banastar retired and it was thought he would never be seen on the track again But trainer Hill patched him up last fall and the EOU of Farandole did so well that he was entered in all of the big handicaps for this year In assigning the weights handicapper Vosburgh considered Banastars chances so good that he handed top weight to him in the Brooklyn and Suburban Banastar and the other horses in Mr Mackays stable have been win ¬ tering at Monmouth Park And now comes the news that W C Whitneys Elkhorn is a victim of the Westbury influenza The colt is a fouryearold by Belvidere Elkhorn Lass and was raced in England last year with little success He was brought back here last December and has been entered in the handicaps Following the announcement that the crack filly Endurance by Eight and the great colt Goldsmith have been struggling with the dreaded disease Elkhorns malady comes as another severe setback for Mr Whitneys stable It was said yesterday that En ¬ durance by Eight is convalescent Her tempera ture has become normal again and Dr Sheppard says she will soon be able to indulge in light train ¬ ing But in the opinion of experts the filly will not be seen in races until the middle or the latter part of the coming campaign campaignThe The uncertainties of maintaining a racing stable are well illustrated by Mr Whitneys case Last year when he was buying up all of the best two yearolds it was frequently said he would corner the racing game and soon hold all of the big stakes at his mercy He sent the 50000 Nasturtium to run in the Derby but the colt was taken ill soon after his arrival on British soil and it is now a question whether he will be able to start in Eng ¬ lands blue ribbon event Mr Whitneys other noted racers including Endurance by Eight Blue Girl Goldsmith King Hanover Gold Seeker and others have been Buffering from influenza which often produces lung trouble of apermanent nature and some of them will have to be handled very care ¬ fully before they can be subjected to the rigors of training The colt Yankee winner of the Futurity last year has so far escaped the malady and has wintered EO well that he is expected to capture some rich events this season That there is some ¬ thing wrong with the climate or the quarters at Westbury seems to bo a prevailing impression among turfmen who say the fact that the horses of other owners have gone through the winter with scarcely a sick day shows that much depends upon the location of a stable It is said Mr Whitney has decided definitely not to send his horses to West bury another winter but will quarter some of them at his new Sheepshead Bay stables and others at the Eancocas Farm at Jobstown which he recently leased from Mrs Lillian Barnes Allien AllienThere There was plenty of work at the Sheepshead Bay and Gravesend tracks yesterday Trainer Jack Joy ner at Sheepshead Bay showed among others Fly ¬ wheel Numeral Clonmel and April Shower Fly ¬ wheel which is owned by Perry Bolmont has win ¬ tered well and looks as if ho would bo a dangerous factor in many races this year Joyner had put too the twoyearolds Tioga Yaqui Anticipation Wilhelmina Petty Blue and Ancke all of whom got breathers Trainer Peter Wimmer as usual worked Garry Hermann Blackmoro Hands Across Haversack and Hyphen at three parts speed through the backstretch and allowed the youngsters Blue Eibbon River Pirate Oil in the Can East Indian and Indian Fairy to trot and canter Tony Astes youngsters were also in evidence including Sweet Marjorie by Goldfinch Margerique and a half sister to Nasturtium NasturtiumOver Over at Gravesend Father Bill Daly displayed Alsike and Fabius together who worked five fur ¬ longs in 103 His twoyearolds Hurry and Aunio Daly were also sent along at a good clip William Lakeland put Ten Candles Enright and The Re ¬ gent through some fast gallops M F Dwyers lot showed well includingEthics Trumpet Francesco William Stead Michaelmas Cincinnatus and others Green Morris Cunard who has grown into a fine threeyearold was out with a filly by Golden Garter Pink Cottage hence a sister to Golden Cottage The latter is a powerful youngster who looks more like a colt than a filly This week there will be a general exodus for Washington for the Bennings meeting which opens there a week from next Tuesday
