GOSSIP OF THE TURF John Slack who wilt ride in the west next season for J B Lewman came near winding up the New Orleans season with a bunch of trouble The sud ¬ den improvement of Lofter on the day before tho meeting closed with Lindsay up was BO great that there were some questions asked Slack for his rides on previous and recent occasions Ed Reynolds the owner of Lofter openly charged that Slack had pulled the horse while Slack says he was on a dead one his belief being so strong that he said to starter Fitzgerald while at tho post Im on a dead one There the matter rests and as the charges and countercharges were only made on the closing day of the meeting it will likely continue to rest there Capt J H Rees of Memphis who acted as pre ¬ siding steward at tho race meeting which closed last Saturday at New Orleans passed through Cincinnati last Monday on his way to Pittsburg where he goes on a business trip The Captain who is a resident of Memphis is heavily interested in tho traffic on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers His business calls him to Pittsburg several limes a year and in fact so much of his time is speiit in the Smoky City that ho is building a residence there thereWhile While in Cincinnati ho was the guest of Captain J F Ellison superintendent of the Cincinnati office of the Pittsburg and Cincinnati Packet Line with whom Mr Rees is interested in a business sense and has been for nearly twenty years Cap ¬ tain Roes did not have much to say on turf matters but a few weeks ago he gave out an interview that after the New Orleans meeting ho would not be con ¬ nected with any track except at Memphis and Louisville this spring and after the coming meet ¬ ing which commences next week his only connec ¬ tion at Memphis would be on the Board of Govern ¬ ors of tho Memphis Jockey Club as he thought he was entitled to a rest after many years of active business life He will bo back in Memphis in time for the opening next Monday MondayBelgium Belgium has not attained the prominence in the racing way that other countries have yet their means of regulating betting is to be commended Tho layers of odds in Belgium are not actually licensed but they are under control Each morn ¬ ing of a race day they must present themselves at the offices of tho Jockey Club and get their card allowing them to bot that day on the racecourse and entitling them to occupy a certain pitch pitchFor For this privilege they have to pay 5 which goes to the fund of the Race Society but if any complaint has been lodged against the layer if he is known to be a defaulter or if it can bo proved that ho has accepted bets from jockeys or given any jockey a present his ticket is withheld and he is not allowed to bet at all Wolshers are therefore practically unknown there thereMoreover Moreover every bot has to be entered in a book which has been stamped and initialed at the Jockey Club and it can be called in for inspection at any moment When the book is filled it must bo taken 1 to the Jocko Club before a now one will bo issued Manager Fowler of the Newport track was asked recently if he was going to allow the Charleston horses to participate in tho racing at his course courseI I have net made up my mind on that point said he though I see no reason why horses and owners should not have tho right to race anywhere unless they are under suspension for fraud It is immaterial whether the track is a mile long or not There are rascals on every track in the country and I dont think there were any more of them at Charleston than there were at Now Orleans One thing I will Bay there will be no funny business at Newport I will look up some of tho pedigrees of these babies before I will let them have a chanco to got away with anything The game has to be on the level and I will make short work of them if I catch any of them trying to steal anything I have lots of applications for stable room from owners who have not raced anywhere this winter I am not ready to make any announcement as to the opening date as I want to bo good and ready before I do that Thisis going to bo one of the times when I dont intend to make any mistakes There are rumored to be in process of organiza ¬ tion at Nashville and Lexington syndicates for tho purpose of purchasing yearlings and holding them for disposal privately at such figures as will pro ¬ duce a goodly percentage on the investment investmentAt At the head of the proposed Nashville syndicate is Madden Winston a prominent insurance man and a leading spirit in the one in Lexington is said to be Counselor Bill Brien who launched the pro ¬ position out of which the Kentucky Mutual Sweep ¬ stakes Association was incorporated last week weekAside Aside from these proposed organizations several individuals who have money to invest have been advertising in the turf papers lately for the address of breeders who have yearlings for sale for cash cashIt It is figured by these parties that tho demand for racing material for 1903 will be greater than the supply and that prices accordingly will bo higher than ever in the worlds history They figuro also that some breeders are not in a position to hold their yearlings until the Juno and September sale periods in tho face of a cash offer the 1st of April and that these breeders would rather sell now for a hundred or so dollars less per head than have the care of the youngsters for two or four months and tho uncertainty attending ship ¬ ment and gale galeSuch Such a price af this time of the year as Mr Camdan received forhis yearlings is considered by the majority of turfmen a very excellent average and they declare that ho did well in disposing of them themThese These same men however arguo that in tho light of tho present condition of the market Messrs Schorr and McCafferty have a bargain in tho trans ¬ action whether they mean to sell tho youngsters or keep them for racing purposes Should there be ono such as Yankee or Endurance by Right among them they will have lost nothing on the deal Daily America Felix Carr the once clever jockey and who in re ¬ cent years has been training horses for Barney Schreiber has been mysteriously missing since last Saturday night at New Orleans He was last seen there on Canal Street and had made arrangements to share a car with owner C Mulholland in ship ¬ ping their horses to Roby Barney Schreiber whoso horses at the Crescent City were in charge of Carr telegraphed 225 to him from San Francisco and ordered the animals shipped here When the horse train left last Sunday morning at 3 30 Carr did not show up and nothing has been heard or seen of him since Saturday night Besides the money telegraphed to him by Schreiber he had about 200 of his own and it is feared that ho is the victim of foul play The car containing Mulhol lands and Schreibcrs horses arrived here with eleven others Tuesday morning but the Illinois Central would not allow the animals to be taken from it until the freightage of 225 had boon paid It was held at South Chicago The horses had been penned up for three days but secretary Nathanson of the Harlem Jockey Club guaranteed the pay ¬ ment of charges and the car was sent to Roby at once Felix Carr sent Jerry Hunt Kingstelle Merida and Meran The horses will be in a rather stiff condition for several days No now arrivals came to Roby yesterday and this fact pleased sec ¬ retary Nathanson as he says they have more than enough at tho Indiana course already Ono trainload of men and women from Now Or ¬ leans on the way to Washington last Monday came very near not reaching there The engineer struck a landslide and the whole train was wrecked Though but one person was killed there were sev ¬ eral injured It occurred out in the woods about nineteen miles from Washington George Odom and hisbrother John were aboard and they escaped injuries but lost all their clothes as the wreck caught fire and burned to tho ground groundTho Tho train that followed the wreck camo from Memphis and had T Burns as a passenger He tells the story As soon as we found out what the trouble was I jumped off our train and the first chaps I saw were George Odom and John They were sitting on some pine logs in their undershirts There were scores of folks walking about in pajamas and nighties nightiesIt It was an awful looking sight to see tho train burning up and the passengers hanging around I fixed up George Odom with some dry clothes or he would have landed on Pennsylvania Avenue with an undershirt and a blanket blanketThere There wore no horse cars attached to the wreck but there were several regular racegoers that I dont know by name The man killed was a porter and tho engineer and a brakemau were injured but not seriously According to report T C McDowell tho western turfman who owns tho colt AlanaDale and will also train W K Yauderbilts stable this year will proceed without delay to Washington after racing ono day at Memphis McDowell says that ho will campaign almost exclusively in the east this year and that by degrees Mr Vanderbilts horses will be seen at all of the metropolitan tracks AlanaDale by tho way has been troubled of lato with tender feet and McDowell does not intend to take chances with him until well into the season but will bring him here to run in the American Derby According to tho latest training intelligence from England Huggins is giving Potronius Yolodyovski Kilmarnock II Intruder Wild Seaman Eliza ¬ beth M Ondulla Spectrum Abeyance filly and Game Chick regular work on tho Bury sido at New ¬ market Nasturtiums name is not mentioned as among those seen daily on the track The horses so far have only been given easy exercise at five and six furlongs On the race side at Newmarket Olym ¬ pian Conroy Kearsargo Cap and Bolls Disguise Noonday Sinopi and others of the Keene string arc out daily for short cantors Mr Crokers Minnie Deo and his Derby candidate Stanhope havo been going slow miles at Wantage where the weather has not been favorable
