NORMAN in SUBSTITUTE FOR PRISCILLIAN The Siwrting Lifes Newmarket correspondent tells an interesting bit of news about Mr Belmont s Norman III which won the Two Thousand Guineas at Newmarket May J He writes writesI I had occasion this evening to institute some inquiries resecting the pedigree of his dam Nin ¬ eveh and these led to the unearthing of a very curious story But for a mischance we should nevw have had Norman III in this country at All When a year last autumn Mr August Belmont selected n batch of yearlings to send to Newmarket to be trained by John Watson the sou of Octagon and Nineveh was not Included At the last moment however a colt named Priscillian which was one of the chosen was seized with a serious illness ami so Norman III was substituted In a letter explaining the circumstances Mr Belmout said he was forwarding the coH because be thought he might grow into a nice horse The full pedigrees of the other yearlings were sent over but x sslhly owing to an oversight that of Norman III was not forwarded and Watson did not discover the omission until this evening eveningThe The latest betting May 9 on the Epsoni Derby gives these figures 100 to 14 against Norman III 100 to 12 against Mountain Apple 100 to 12 against Lesbla 10 to 1 against Perrier 10 to 1 against Royal Realm 100 to 3 against Elm Twig TwigA A good critic wrote of Norman III on the edge of his victory The Belmont colt is a hard clean wiry whippy bay with a goose rump a near fore fetlock and an off hind one white He has fine depth and a good forehand generally but he cannot possibly be a great horse despite his perfect balance and harmonious action Yet he too is one that would be picked as more suitable for Epsom than the Rowley mile I very much doubt his winning at Epsom however where he will meet fitter horses than he did today He was trained to perfection and is the sort of horse to run well over heavy ground groundThe The English racing sharps are in love with August Belmonts Historic which performed poorly behind Rhodora in the One Thousand Guineas She is a bay by Octagon Donna Henrietta and is a big slashing filly of beautiful conformation and finish But her forelegs are bad and will not carry her to many victories
