KINGS PLATE FALLS TO SEAGRAM AGAIN Seismic Proves the Winner in a Close Finish with Shimoncsc Toronto May 123 Under conditions that could not very well have been improved upon and before the largest gathering that ever witnessed the running of a horse race over a Canadian track Joseph K Seagrams threeyearold Seismic beat the Hendrie lilly ShimoiKse by a neck for the Kings Plate The race was run over a good track and before a crowd that numbered close to 23000 The result of the big race pleased the vast throng and when the winner was led back to the stand he was greeted with loud and prolonged cheers It was the forty olghth renewal of the stake and tho thirteenth victory for the Seagram stable There is probably more sentiment attached to the running of this stake than any other race on the American turf tho con ditiuns calling for starters to be bred in the prov ¬ ince of Ontario and being maidens at the time of starting The first Kings Plate was run In 1SCO and was won by John White Sir Tiittnn horse Don Juan which was ridden by Charles Littlelicld father of the trainer of the winner of todays race Seismic is by Havoc a horse that performed well on tin metropolitan tracks a few years back ami out of Semley He was bred at the Seagram farm at Waterloo Seismic ran coupled with Dog of War and Half a Crown as the Seagram entry Seismic was probably the stables choice for the race as the regular rider Fairlirother had the mount The colt was well ridden and won only because Fair brotlier outtinishcd Mulcahy when it came to a drive The Seagram entry was always favorite favoriteIn In the early running it looked as if the famous old Boyle colors would be carried to victory for Supper Dance showing keen speed dashed to the front and made a fast pace for this class of horses The first half mile was run in 19 and tho six furlongs in 115 Supper Dance was leading at tills stage of the race by a couple of lengths and apparently going easy Botli Seismic and Sliiuionese were a bit slow to get going and in tho early stages trailed along in behind the leaders and not until well around the far turn did they loom tip as dangerous Kntering the stretch there was a general closing and shifting of positions and straiglitened out for the final run the Seagram colors showed in front Failbrother had succeeded in slipping through on the inside while Mulcahy on the Hendrle lilly was freed to go around the leaders on the outside At the eighth post Shiinoneso was going the strong ¬ er of the pair and just opimsito the betting rin showed in front At this stage of the race it looked a certainty that the Hendrie filly would be the victor but at a critical point of the struggle Mul caliy evidently became overanxious as be shifted liis lines and went to his whip In doing so he let go the fillys head and she swerved across to the inside and lost about a half length This enabled the Seagram colt to get to the front again and under a gruelling drive lie finished with the cour age of a lion and beat Shimonese a neck neckThe The Kings Plate lias boon run as the chief fea ¬ ture of the Toronto meeting since 1SG2 It was known as the Queens Plate up to and including 1901 J M Seagrams horses won the stake from l il to IS S inclusive and also in 1900 1901 1905 190tand this year Its distance was reduced from one and onehalf miles to one and onequarter milis in 1SS7 The stakes tabled history since 1900 is as follows Year Winner A Wt Jockey Val Time 1900 Dalmoor i 12liII Lewis 1120211 1901 John Kuskin 1O5J Vititou 1470 21S 10 Vain wright 172 215 903 Thcssalou lot Castro 19UO 2151 90 J Sapper 103 J Walsh 1975212 905 Inform 100 H Phillips 2092 212 905 Slaughter 1O Troubol 3395 211R 907 Kelvin IOC lolev 3707 i12g 1908 Seismic 10Ul hrothcr 3050211 3050211Outside Outside of the Plate the feature races were the Minto Stakes and a steeplechase ovcc the twomile course The Ilcndrie colt Glimmer proved an easy winner in the Minto Stakes while The Knight beat Piektime out in the steeplechase after a gallant struggle Only two favorites won Lady Irinsi and Seismic being the successful choices Fortytwo layers livelyThe were in line and speculation was lively The condensed history of the Minto Stakes Is fliown below Year Winner A Wt Jockey Val Time 1901 Billot t I 107 J Daly 951I9J 1905 Norhury 5 100 J Walsh 111 14 J 190 Blennworth 7 101 W McGce 112O 1I8 1907 Karl Rogers 4 97 Lycurgns 1080 14 190S Glimmer 4 98 Mulcahy 800119
