REACTION FOLLOWS LATONIA DERBY DAY Rainfall Causes Slow Track and Decreased Attend ¬ ance but Sport Is Good Cincinnati June As was to be ex ¬ pected then was a considerable falling olf in the attendance at Latonla today There always is following Derby day Added to that a drizzling rain which began during the night and continued nearly all morning made racegoing anything but a pleasant prospect In spite of all this the crowd was just about up to the average patronage under similar unfavorable conditions The speculation however was light This was due to the fact that the program contained no special attractions nor did the races offer much in the way of specu ¬ lative mediums Three of them were open affairs in which very moderate animals competed The entire volume of business transacted was nearly half that of yesterday yesterdayThe The two last races furnished the best contests of the day both being won in close and gruelling fin ¬ ishes Surprises were frequent Merrick Itock castle end dialfield all strongly supported going down in defeat Out particular thing the crowd greatly appreciated and that was that nearly an hours time was saved in running of todays pro ¬ gram 4 4On On account of the big crowd Tuesday and the fact that some of the machines at first worked poorly and new men had to be broken in there was considerable delay With improvement on the part jf employes the management promises to run off the races promptly hereafter The steeplechase the first of the season here went to Class Leader in easy style In the opening race Hester Xorra threatened to spreadeaglc her opponents but gradually tired and when a furlong out was knocked completely out of it when Taylor m Mattie Mack allowed his mount to swerve into her Taylor then paid his respects to Divorcee which was gaining and ultimately won out by a slight margin The judges promptly fined Taylor 50 for his rough work workThe The officials were dissatisfied with the listless ride Pitkens gave Morrkk the favorite in the eeond race and questioned him at length as well as trainer Milam The latter exonerated PIckens to an extent by claiming the boy rode to orders and that the horse would not run to his liest form on a oose track Uke that of this afternoon Toe Moser in this race was the easiest winner outside of Class Leader during the afternoon afternoonTho Tho chief upset came with the defeat of Rock castle in the third The Dick Welles colt was a topheavy choice but was easily taken Into camp by Richard iltecd Xed Carmack in a drive gaining second place by a very small margin marginIronlHMind IronlHMind was lucky to get home a nose In ad ¬ vance of Serenade in the fiftili race and but for the IMW sendoff the latter got would have been beaten handily Plaiitland was also lucky as Bottles was best and but for Kobinsons poor judgment would have been an easy winner winnerA A serious accident was narrowly averted when a race train from Cincinnati filled with passengers going to the track crashed into the rear end of a freight train Xoue was injured save one of the brakemen on the freight train and he was not Seri ¬ ously hurt hurtMary Mary Burton which was a carded starter in yes ¬ terdays second race will in future bo allowed to start proper identification having been made madeTwo Two show machine were takeii off this afternoon in anticipation of a light business Q 4 Blutc trainer for W Gerst will ship a con ¬ signment of horses to Xew York next Saturday SaturdayIcaria Icaria had to be withdrawn from the fifth race on account of lameness
