TRAINER COTTON IN DIRE TROUBLE Seattle Wash July 28 V Neugent the crack Salvado gelding that H A Cotton brought here from California to train for the Old Ned Stable in conjunction with his own horses Janeta and Captain Burnett turned such a form somersault today in winning the Capitol Hill Handicap from a baud of good sprinters that Cotton and his entire racing out lit were forthwith suspended by the stewards Yes ¬ terday F Neugent was a hot favorite in a similar field and failed to show even a Hash of speed witli jockey Gaugel up Today with jockey Lycurgus as his pilot he ran a sparkling race and wou with ease at 20 to 1 which long odds were bid against him solely because of his poor performance of yesterday the general conclusion being that the horse was far from his true form Cotton claimed when he stewards made an inquiry this morning concerning yesterdays poor showing by F Neugent that he had placed a substantial bet on the horse and that he was at a loss to account for his bad race as the horse had been working well wellInasmuch Inasmuch as Cottons horses have been notorious inandouters both here and at Oakland the officials decided to hold him responsible when todays race brought matters to a crisis crisisAmong Among the horsemen there is an inclination to blame jockey Gaugel for the failure of F Neugent to run his race yesterday It is pointed out that many horses that Gaugel has recently ridden have improved wonderfully in other hands The stewards had Gaugel before them today and will devote more attention to him tomorrow His rides on Stoney Lee iBarney Oldfield Dulcinea Miss Worth and other horses with which he should have done much better than he did will be carefully looked into intoPhillistina Phillistina and Harry Scott were the successful favorites today and Kerry the second choice of the opening race the the only other shortpriced win ¬ ner The remainder of the card went to long shots shotsJockey Jockey Walsh was painfully injured by being thrown from the fractious Cosset twice while at the barrier in the second race causing cancellation of the remainder of his engagements for the day
