CONEY ISLAND JOCKEY CLUBS ACTION The unexpected action of the Coney Island Jockey Club makes It evident that the pertinacity of Acting District Attorney KIder has scared a good many of the members Indictment by a grand Jury is not a particularly agreeable thing and perhaps their trepidation is not to be wondered at Still the threat to close the gates of Sheepshead Bay to the public as a deterrent from betting does not seem to have been happily inspired The Coney Island Jockey Club owes its great profits of tlie past to that public If the patrons of the sport are willing to endure the discomforts of the present situa ¬ tion the club should recognize their rights and do the same To close the track gates and run the stakes off in private would certainly be meeting the clubs obligations to subscribing owners but it would at the same time be shortsightedly disregard ¬ ing its obligations to the public that has always supported loyallyAs it loyally As to its meeting to begin next Saturday it may be remarked that the club has never broken its promises and last spring it formally announced that Its meetings would be carried on this year de ¬ spite adverse legislation That is sufficient assur ¬ ance and there is no good reason to expect anything else than that the meeting will be carried through successfully successfullyIn In the meantime it seems that Philip J Dwyer sized up the situation accurately when he said All the tracks ought to be willing to race at a loss for two years I have made a lot of money in racing aiid I am prepared to send it all hack again If necessary to keep tip the greatest sport 011 earth
