LEADING MONEY WINNING HORSES OF 1909 It is generally recognized that S C Hildreths Joe Madden tlie horse that heads the 1909 list cf win nors on the American turf while admittedly a racer of high class was by no means the best horse of the year It is conceded that his stablemates King James and Fitz Ilerlwrt which stand respectively third and fifth in the list of the years leading winners wero tath considerably superior to him Hilarious from the Keenc stable repeatedly beat him in important races and expert opinion rates James R Keenes Mask rttc the acknowledged lilly champion of the year In the same class with Hildreths great pair of cracks Tinre was a keen desire on the part of turf devotees to see a meeting lietwcen Fitz Herbert and Maskette iidndttedly the topnotcliers of their nge and sex respectively but the desire was not gratified and the ques ¬ tion of their relative superiority remained unsettled Both had their partisans and a match between them would have effectually settled the mooted question of the threeyearold supremacy of 100 Admirers of Maskette maintained that she had demonstrated her superiority to Fitz Herbert as a twoyearold while on the other hand the adherents of Fitz Herbert pointed out that his threeyearold form represented an im ¬ provement over bis showing as a twoyearold It was generally agreed that the pair stood out above all the others of their age in training and that Hilarious came next There was no question of the supremacy of King James in the fouryearoldandover division The son of Plaudit Unsightlywas In a class by himself Barney Schreibers Jack Atkin remained king of the sprinters but his winnings were moderate his successes being confined to modest stakes and overnight handicaps In Firestone S C Hildreth had a horse that was capable of beating nearly all of the stake horses in training with the exception of his own renowned stablemates Besides Kitz Herbert Maskette Hilarious and Joe Madden the notable threeyear olds of 1909 included R T Wilson Jrs Olambala a tried and true stayer and Al Koeuigsbergs Rose juien one of the most consistent fillies of the year at sprinting distances distancesJames James R Keenes Sweep figures as the principal twoyearold winner of 19C9 becansft of his Futurity and National Stallion Race successes Sweep was not generally looked upon as the best of his age in training however The general disposition was to regard C L Harrisons Waldo a colt that was not well engaged in the rich stakes of the year and consequently had fewer opportunities than Sweep and James McManus Rocky OBrien both of which led him in the aggregate of money won as the champion two yearold of the year The chief factor in Rocky OBriens prominence was his victory in the rich Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga James McLaughlins Faimtleroy was a twoyearold that achieved prominence late in lle year and he may be in the first flight of the threeyearolds of 110 Ocean Bound generally regarded as ihe best twoyearold filly of the year was seen in action infrequently due to a physical infirmity which necessitated her retirement prematurely prematurelyNone None of the great horses of 1000 succeeded in getting through the years campaigning without defeat Fitz Herbert came the closest to achieving such a distinction of any of the leaders that started a consider ¬ able number of times His record was fourteen firsts out of fifteen starts The single occasion upon which he was beaten was in the Oriental Handicap at Gravesend in September when James R Keenes Affliction with 07 pounds up as against his 128 led him a length at the finish of the mile and a threesixteenths con ¬ test after he had been bumped to his knees at the beginning of the race It was a lamentable fluke that robbed him of an unbeaten record for the year When it is considered that he was always pitted against the best horses in training his 1009 record stamps him as a truly wonderful horse Hilarious and Maskette likewise succeeded in getting through the year with only one defeat each but both of them started many less times than Fitz Herbert did didJoe Joe Madden owes his piece at the head of the money winning horses of 1909 principally to successes in thp Belmont Stakes the Brooklyn Derby the Los Angeles Derby and the Brookdale Handicap Third to Hilarious and Fayette in the Tidal Stakes second to Hilarious in the Carlton and Withers Stakes second to High Private in the California Derby and econd to Wise Mason In the Baychester Handicap were other performances that heloed to swell his winnings to the handsome total of 44905 The Belmout Stakes and Brnoklvn Derby alone account for 33775 of his total totalOf Of the horses that figured prominently in the list of leaders for 1908 Sir Martin Fair Play and Ballot thethrec topnotchers were raced during 1909 In England with less success than anticipated Sir Martin ruaile7 a faiV siowIiigronry while the performances of the other two were ilisinctly disappointing The uh beaten Colin another of the 1908 leaders was also shipped abroad but failed to stand training and has been retired to the stud studSince Since and including 1902 when Daily Racing Form first began to
