NO LICENSE FOR SANTA ANITA Talk of Southern California Meeting Ends Coincident with Announcement of Oakland Extension San Francisco Cal January 14 President Thomas II Williams of the New California Jockey Club an ¬ nounced late last night that the meeting at Oakland will be extended for forty days ami possibly sixty The announcement hailed with joy by horsemen and devotees of the sport on the coast came as a surprise in some quarters as it is the general understanding that the association is not making money The move of President Williams is In the Interest of keeping racing alive oil the Pacific coast It is felt that the sport must be nursed along in the hope that some relief may be obtained at next winters session of the legislature Talk of a meeting at Santa Anifa Park is shown to be without foundation by the fur ¬ ther announcement by President Williams that the Los Angeles Racing Association will not be granted a license by the Pacific Jockey Club this spring When Mr Williams guaranteed a meeting of sixty days of racing at Oakland he said that the New California Jockey Club and the Santa Anita Asso ¬ ciation had pooled issues for this winter It was felt it was better to combine forces and concentrate efforts at one point so that racing of the highest order possible might be given in the face of adverse legis ¬ lation lationBarney Barney Schreiber paid a flying visit to his farm near Woodland Tuesday He reports that there are seven finelooking yearlings at the place They are by Dcutscliland Canopus and Galveston Mr Schreiber has twentylive marcs at the farm and the stallion Joe Carey is also there Mr Sclireiber says lie is confident of a renewed prosperity for racing and he is going ahead with plans for the future futureAnnouncement Announcement was made at Oakland today of the engaging of two wellknown riders for W10 by prominent owners Carroll Shilling has signed a con ¬ tract to ride for Sam Hlldreth from April to Novem ¬ ber next He left this evening for Juarez with II G Bcdwell being under engagement to him until March MarchIt It J Mackenzie has purchased the contract from Bedwell held on jockey Eddie Taplln and Mackenzie has signed Taplin for two years starting March 31 next The terms in each case were not announced but it is understood Mackenzie paid 2000 for the release of Taplin Dave Leary who represented Sam Hildrcth admitted that Shilling will receive a big salary Bedwell has arranged to have Eddie Duguu do his riding here hereTodays Todays races were run over a slonny track and there were a few light showers although the sun was shining at the finish There was a carnival of long shots one of the outsiders being night Soct a 50 to 1 chalice Paul Clifford and IcTfinfuale were other outsiders to win Miss Oflicious favorite in the fourth race pulled up lame lameHapid Hapid Water was bid up from 500 to 700 by P Howley but was retained Priceless Jewel was claimed by C Davids for 500
