C J FITZGEEALD APPOINTED JUDGE Stewards of the Jockey Club Fill Vacancy Created by Death of Clarence McDowell New York February 10 Christopher J Fitzger ¬ ald has been appointed placing judge for the Jockey Club tracks for the coming season The appoint ¬ ment was made at the regular monthly meeting of the stewards held at Vindsor Arcade today and was made necessary by this death of Clarence McDowell last fall Mr Fitzgerald has been associated with racing for several years ami for many seasons was a starter over the Jockey Club tracks later tilling the same position at the Fair Grounds track in New Orleans He has filled several other offices for the Jockey Club and his last active connection with racing about Xew York was the management of the Brighton Beach Racing Association AssociationWhen When the Brighton Beach Association declared off its second meeting in 1008 Mr Fitzgerald as ¬ sociated himself with racing in Canada and last year he was managing director of the Montreal Jockey Club lie also on various occasions served In the stewards stand standIn In the stand with Mr Fitzgerald this year will be C II Pettingill the veteran otticlal who was the associate of Clarence McDowell Like Mr Fitz ¬ gerald he has filled various racing ofiices and for several seasons was a starter In addition to his duties as a placing judge Mr Pettingill as was the case last season will be the clerk of the scales scalesThe The stewards also granted racing dates to the Maryland Jockey Club for a meeting at Pimlico April 2O to May 7 inclusive For a time it was thought that the season for the Xew York tracks would not begin until the conclusion of racing at Pimlico but the demand for racing time was so great this year that it was found necessary to use all the legal dates As a consequence racing in Xew York is to begin April 15 five days earlier than the meeting in Maryland The following officials for the Pimlico meeting were approved Stewards August Belmont William P Manly and Thomas Clyde Judges W P Riggs and B C Smith Clerk of the Scales Frank J Bryan Starter A B Dade DadeThe The stewards present at the incethvg were August Belmout F K Hitchcock Andrew Miller and Schuy ler L Parsons
