WITH THE EASTERN TRAINERS Ballot Continues to Go Along Impressively Fitz Herbert Still High in Flesh Training Moves New York March 23 Many enthusiastic turfmen visited Kheepshead Bay Gravesend and Belmont Park Sunday to see the horses gallop and muter The metropolitan season is approaching so rapidly that the trainers are now lieginning to put on slight pressure with tin result that speed is increasing and the racers are improving steadily More than 100 twoyearolds cantered1 up and down the various courses at Sheepshead Bay and some of them Avere allowed to run eighths In 12 and quarters in 2 These youngsters probably will R seen at Aqueduct and Jamaica and during the next ten days they will be put through a vigorous course of training including thorough schooling at the barrier It is too early to get a good line on any of these twoyearolds however and the critics who looked them over so expressed themselves Of course the dockers have tlieir favorites and are ready to laud them to the skies but those close observers of training methods are not always cor ¬ rect in their deductions deductionsHorses Horses of known prowess therefore attracted the most attention Tht star iff them all was the magnificent Fitz Herbert top weight Ira the big handicaps and destined to carry the Madden silks instead of llildreths this year The son of Ethel liert looking the picture of health enjoyed a slow gallon with a stable ilvoy tugging at the bridle The horse looked very much on the blir side but he is absolutely sound as to wind and limb and the prevailing opinion is that lie will remain king of the turf turfKing King James another superb thoroughbred trotted and cantered liut at no time did his rider release a tight grip on the reins King James a typical race horse and the star of the Hildreth string will not start before the Metropolitan Handicap at Bel mont Park Ilildreth intends to point him for that event which he won last year prior to capturing the Brooklyn Handicap Joe Madden which has devel ¬ oped into a strapping threeyearold also cantered and breathed the linicing air always showing a desire to run Dalmatian another son of Ethclhert looking as if he will be a formidable threeyearold worked liveeighths in 1OS with Ilildreth nodding in approvalThe approval The Kecne horses were permitted to do some can ¬ tering particularly the twoyearolds but the real magnet was Ballot the Voter horse that raced un ¬ successfully in England last year In 100S Ballot was undoubtedly the Iwst race horse in America but when he passed out of Jami BBorrei lmiuls he last much of his winning form and on the British turf he accomplished nothing Biit Bowes methods even at tills early stage are producing results for Ballot absolutely without n physical blemish is galloping Impressively and appears to be in iKvssession of his former racing qualities ISallot will not be sent to the races until the latter i art of the Gravesend meeting when Itowe pryhahly will start him once or twice before he goes after the Sulburban Mr Krenes iMaskctte proliahlr the best race mare in training jogged around the Bay track at a two iniiiiile gait accompanied by Sweep now a finely developed threeyearold There are nearly 500 horses stabled on thn Long Island tracks now and the number will bft doubled before Aqueduct opens Owners and trainers are looking forward to a prosperous campaign under the auspices of ithu Jockev Club while the turf solons themselves are filled with hope hopeH H F Carmans horses are doing nicely since their arrival at Belmont Park from
