* — : _ — f 1 FEATURES OF RECENT ENGLISH RACING +1 — — + London, Eng.. September 3. — An agreeable change from the succession of meetings of small importance following Goodwood was provided at York and Derby, where several events of high value were decided, the results in several cases having a decided bearing on the future. As an instance, the defeat of Greenback by such a moderate racer as Marajaa in the Breeders St. Leger at Derby day before yesterday is accepted as disposing of the bitters pretensions to a chance of winning the Doncaster St. Leger next Wednesday. Of course it was well known thai Greenback had been amiss, but it was thought be bad about recovered, and the hope that lie might be able to run to bis Derby form in the great Doncaster event found frequent expression in the London ante-post betting market. However, after his defeat referred to 100 to 3 became bis hopeless quotation, with no takers, and there is much regret that Iird Villiers has lost bis chance of winning the last of this years classics. With recovered health Greenback may bring some compensation next year, being a good horse and a genuine stayer. All hough the decision of the St. Leger Is right at band there is much doubt as to the probable outcome, even though l.einberg is a decided favorite and Swynford as Irmly the second choice. There is in some quarters a disquieting doubt as to Lem-berg staying the route of the race, and this brings support for Swynford on the ground that no such doubt clouds his prospects. Winkipop lias been backed and would advance in the market but for the same suspicion that attaches to I.emberg. Her great sined is Irmly established, but it is doubted if she is up to much more than a mile and a quarter. Itose-drop also has considerable support, but the general opinion is that the colts of this year outclass the fillies, and. although frequently called "a mares race." there is small expectation that any of the latter will even be placid, hslsnr Fan. the Russian Sr. Leger candidate, arrived at Doncaster yesterday afternoon and appeared to be little the worse for his journey. He has won good races, but is not feared in the S:t. lager, although sure to run. Duke Michael won the Ieveril of the Peak Plate at Derby yesterday with 111 pounds up. His weight in th Cambridgeshire was .Mi pounds, and be gained a hen poliad penalty by US success, making his Cambridgeshire Impost now Im; pounds. Last year when carrying but 08 pounds Christmas Daisy won the Ieveril of the Peak Elate and subsequently won the Cambridgeshire under 102 pounds. People are already quoting the precedent and It will not be at all surprising if Duke Michael proves a imptilar fancy for the big handicap of the Houghton week at Headquarters. E. Wyndham. a patron of Mr. Wellingtons stable, has purchased the smart Dish steeplechaser. Another Delight, for ,300 sovereigns, probably having the Grand National in view. The death is reported of the New Zealand stallion. Mnskaneer, by Musket, from Venus Transit. The best of his progeny was Lottie, which won the Auckland Cup in 1SP4. The New Zealand breeder and sportsman. J. B. Beid, who is now on a visit to England, has purchased the stallions Downshlr* and Vareo. Down- ; shire is by Ayrshire from Seadown. by Orvieto. ! while Vareo is by Marco, from Vara, by St. Angelo, I I from Chenplonf, by Isonomy. | Mr. Fabric is still the unchallenged leader of the winning owners, with Lord Bosebery second, but Sw.vnfords legion of admirers believe Lord Derby will move up Into second place With the running of the Doncaster St. Leger, now but a few days distant. The present standing of owners with 10,000 or more to their credit in stable earnings is as follows: Winng Paces Amount Owner. Horses. Won. Won.
