AUTUMN STAKE BUNS FAB BACK Bace to Be Bun at Churchill Downs Tuesday Has History Bich in Interest Louisville Ky October 1 On Tuesday next the feature of the card at Churchill Downs will be the Autumn Stakes It will be for twoyearolds at threequarters of a mile Its renewal recalls the history of this stake in the early days of Louisville lacing It even goes back beyond the time of Churchill Downs extending to the period when Woodlawn course remeinlwred today only by war ¬ time turfmen was in existence existenceIt It was forty one years ago that four remarkable twoyearolds met in a race which might be termed the inaugural Louisville Autumn Stakes One of those was Enquirer named1 by Gen Abe Buford out of compliment to the Cincinnati Enquirer The colt was the subject of the story written by Gen ¬ eral Buford in which the contention was made that a thoroughbred horse has a soul and that after death the horse has a place in heaven along with his master masterAnother Another starter in the race was the famous Mag ¬ gie B It She was named for the daughter of Sen ¬ ator James B Beck and was owned by Capt James B Clay who was thp aflianced of Maggie B Beck His convivial habits caused the breaking off of the uintch but General Clay cherished his sweetheart so the racer Maggie B B retained her name Mag ¬ gie B B will live for all time in the annals of the stud book as she produced the great Iroquois the only Americanbred horse that ever won the Spsom Derby and the St Legerl Next in that race was Lynchburg named after the city in Virginia lie was owned by Capt James Bacon of South Caro ¬ lina who married a belie of Lsnchburg so It was really in honor of his bride that Captain Bacon named his fleet racer The last of this great quar ¬ tet was the first Ilamlmrg He became noted In subsequent years as the first threeyearold ever sold in America for as much as 10000 10000The The race between these four horses was a battle royal down to the final stride Enquirer won closely pressed 1 y Maggie B B while the judges could Icirdly separate Hamburg from Lynchburg as they finished at the neck of Maggie B B The same horses ran several more races that fall in much the same fashion Once Hamburg was the winner and again Maggie B IB won Before the ssason ended Lynehlmrg defeated the others Hamburg and Lynchburg unfortunately met an early death while still on the turf or they perhaps like En ¬ quirer and Maggie B B might have become famous in thesrud thesrudPassiug Passiug to the twcyearohl autumn racing at Churchill Downs and reviewing stake events in com ¬ parison with the stake race there next Tuesday 187C is a good year to analyze In a stable now on the south side of the Downs is 1 trainer who figured in the twoyearold races of that fall It is Ieter Wiunner who saddled that wonder Belle Meade in all her races The Autumn Stakes on Tuesday is for twoyearold colts fillies and geldings and so was the final event won by Belle Mcade in the Cen ¬ tennial year She defeated that day the great coir Baden Baden which in another season came on and won the Kentucky Derby Then he went east and under the colors of William B Astor won the fravers Stakes at Saratoga Belle Meade sickened ind died not long after her performances that fall It Is said that Ieter Wimiuer wept when the veter ¬ inarian told him the marvelous filly could not live Only last week Mr Wimmer said at the Downs that for years he had seen come and go all of the stars of the American turf but that in all of his experi ¬ ence he never had seen a twoyearold that was the equal of Belle Meade MeadeIn In 1S77 when the Autumn Stakes was decided at the Downs the great Himyar loomed He was so good that his owner Maj B G Thomas told the starter to pay no attention to where the colt was when he lined np the field so long as he was look ¬ ing toward the barrier That is the way Himyar was started lengths at a disadvantage hut he came like a whirlwind and won easily Probably no horse will ever live that will give more prestige to autumn racing at the Downs than did Himyar as he lived to sire the largest moneywinning horse in Domino the American turf has known Domino gave the turf Commando which in turn sired the unbeaten Colin ColinAutumn Autumn twoyearold racing has furnished in its stake events some remarkable upsets The most noteworthy of these was when the supposedly in ¬ vincible Miss Woodford was defeated by Queen Ban Queen Ban in the stud produced Qnesal which in turn produced William Lakelands Electioneer win ¬ ner of the Futurity in 1006 There arc oldtimers who revel today in the recollection that they saw Miss Woodford vanquished in a fall twoyearold stake here as the great mare went on year after year taking race after race from all comers Though nearly thirty years have passed since she appeared upon the turf Miss Woodfords record as the largest moneywinning marc in America remains undis ¬ turbed turbedThe The year 1SS3 was a remarkable one for Capt William Cottrill That season he had Buchanan Mona and Matinee Mona and Matinee were the first noted racers purchased by the late Capt S S Brown This pair introduced to the metropolitan turf T W Rogers Captain Cottrill held on to Buchanan and he won the Kentucky Derby witii him in 1SS4 He also essayed to win the Hindoo Stakes at Latonia which afterward liocame the Latonia Derby However Lucky Baldwin came from Cali ¬ fornia with the mare Fallen Leaf and the terrific pace she set caused her own downfall as well as that of Buchanan The race resulted in a dump as T J Megibbens Andrain won The talent thought it was a fluke but later racing that season proved Audrains supremacy When he raced at Washing ¬ ton Park in Chicago Audrain met defeat in a race against the mighty Frecland FreclandTo To go back to races similar to the Autumn Stakes at the Downs memories arise of Creedmores victory over Vagrant how McCloskey defeated Leonatus in the only race Leonatus ever lost and Spokane showed for the first time the quality which enabled him in the following season to lower the colors of Proctor Knott winner of the first Futurity SK kanes was by far the most sensational Kentucky Derby ever run The distance then was a mile and a half and the time 234 still stands It is not out of place to forecast that tho winner of the Autumn Stakes of 1010 probably will be the winter favorite for the Kentucky Derby of 1011 Among the probable starters Tuesday will be Bound the World Governor Gray LoveNot Ella Brvson Little Father Fairy Story Miss Nett Redwine La IT Mexican Laliold Volthorpe Forehead Princess Industry Jack Denman and Hesitate HesitateIt It is reported that in the Autumn Stakes Dave Nicol will have the mount on Governor Gray Gov ¬ ernor Grays career ha been somewhat marred by indifferent riders Much that he has done has been UIHHI his own courage and Ills own resources resourcesThere There are two more stake races on the card for the present week the South Louisville Handicap for horses of all ages at threequarters of a mile on Tuesday and the Frank Fehr Handicap also for all ages at a mile and twenty yards on Saturday For these events most of the good horses at the Downs are eligible The relative merits of western and eastern horses will ibe demonstrated in these stakes In recent years when the racers of these sections have l eenr pitted against each other It was on the tracks of the east Now the boot Is on the other foot and the west is to be tho scene of the struggle
