PERSEVERANCE HEAPS ITS KEWAKD Lexington Ky October 4 John B Kaufman who owns Peter Pencler is the proprietor of one of the leading markets in this city Racing is a di ¬ version with him and for nearly a quarter of a cen ¬ tury he has annually devoted his spare time in the spring and the fall to triining a horse or two at the local track but he has never had much success with II em Kaufman derived more genuine satisfaction o er the two victories of Peter Pender at the recent ncet Ing here than many a millionaire racing man w Mild get out of n Futurity success You know h saiil a day or two ago Si Hughes and my wife are related and a feu days before the meeting opened here Si at the instigation of Mrs Kaufman I presume dropped into my store and advised me to get rid of Peter Pender Just give him away to somebody and youll IKS better off for hes a crazy horse and will never win you a race SI told me I thanked Si for his advice and went along training Peter The first time Ids name appeared on the card Mrs Kaufman told me that I did not know a race horse from a jackass and predicted that the animal that was to carry my colors would probably kill someone before the race was over Weil you know Peter Ponder ran off in that race and I had to stand a great deal of criticism from relatives and friends But I was determined to get even with them be ¬ lieving in Ieter Pender as I did and I dropped him into what looked like a soft spot and lie came home on the hit I cashed a good bet and wont home with a feeling of satisfaction Blame me if they didnt declare it was an accident that Peter had won The next time out he took the measure of some better horses than he had previously defeated and again I ashed In my neighborhood they are coming to be ¬ lieve now that Peter Ponder has contracted the win ¬ ning habit and that Johnny Kaufman isnt as big a uiutt as they thought he was Peter and I will be hoard from again at Louisville and Latonia
