Handicap Louisville Ky Octol er 12 Close finishes and a liberal sprinkling of surprises featured todays rac ¬ ing at Churchill Downs which was witnessed by one of the b6st midweek attendances of the present meeting Society was oit in full force and filled the spacious clubhouse the Iwxes being occupied by notables from various sections of the country in ¬ cluding both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts One box party consisted of Alfred G Vanderbilt and Daniel Hare of New York and William E Carter of Philadelphia who is one of the judges at the local horse show Todays sport marked the beginning of the second half of the nineteendays meeting arid Secretary Lyman H Davis had arranged a good card topped by the Columbus Handicap at seven furlongs and carrying a monetary value of v600 It proved one of the best contests of the meeting Emperor William and AI Muller engaging in a des ¬ perate drive that lasted throughout the last furlong and landing noses apart Glorio after having sulked for nearly five furlongs took a notion to get into contention in the stretch and came with a cyclonic rush that landed him in third place The onetime useful racer Lawrence P Daley of Fred Cook fame was intended as a betting medium but his connections made the mistake of thinking ho could come back He made a fairly creditable showing only Favorites were beaten in four of the races the exceptions being Emperor William afld The Peer Alma Boy furnished the unset in the opener by showing a decided improvement over previous essays and winning connnandlngly from twelve others Sorrowful acting as the runnerup and outgaming Gliding Belle the favorite forsej ond money moneyTiie Tiie second race was contested by some fast sprintersand resulted in the defeat of John Griffin II In hither ordinary fashion T M Green and Royal Captive leading him to the finish The Jast naniFfl pair strenuously fought it out during the last furlong and Jockey T Koerner on T M Green outgeneraled Keogh at the finish finishJockey Jockey Koerner also figured as a factor in tlio running of the third race in which fourteen maideu twoyearoids accepted the issue He saved an im ¬ mense amount of ground on the stretch torn arid this enabled him to land his mount Bad News IL a handy winner over Old Boy Good horsemanship by Koerner was also responsible for The Peers victory in the closing dash dashF F J Pons overlooked a good opportunity7 to make a big cleanup Iu the fifth race won by his filly Abrasion He let her go to the post unbacked and she made a show of her company winningall the way with plenty in reserve T W Flynn of Chi cago hacked Home Run extensively in this race but Jockey Knapp bungled things badly by getting the tripJake horse pocketed during most of the trip Jake Holtman the wellknown starter was among todays visitors having arrived from California He reports that the racing situation on the coast liaa clarified and that expectations for the cohilmr meeting run high Mr Holtman reports that most of the horsemen who engaged In racing at Salt Lake City Ogden and other western points have asked for stable reservations at Oakland track and that there is little likelihood of a shortage of horses Mr Hoitman departed tonight for Cincin ¬ nati where he will transact some private business before returning to California He will alternate with Richard IJwyer iu doing the starting
