EIGHTEEN ELIGIBLES FOR BLUE GRASS Lexington Ky December 10 Secretary Garret D Wilson of tlie Kentucky Association has jus made tlie announcement that eighteen coming three yearolds eleven that have won races two thu have started and not woa and live that have nevei been to the post remain eligible for the flrst run ¬ ning of the Blue Grass Stakes which is to be one ol the features of the meeting here next spring The Blue Grass Stakes is for threeyearolds exclusively scale weights one mile and au eighth and will bo somewhat in the nature of a preliminary to the Ken tucky Derby which is to be run on tlie opening day of the spring meeting at Louisville The Bint Grass Stakes will have an estimated value of abou 500 It was closed in the summer of 1009 with eightythree nominations as yearlings at 10 each Eighteen have just made the second payment of K each and of these it is expected that at least ten will stay in alter March 1 next at 25 eacli and that probably seven will go to the post about sixty daj later at 100 each This would make 2050 to which the Kentucky Association adds 1500 Tin winner Is to have all of the stakes with the ex ¬ ception of 300 to the second and JOO to the third horse The Mist of eligibles together with tlu names of their owners follows Any Port C Woodford Bertis C Woodford Captain Carraody B Schreiber County Tax H N Smith Du Bois B Schreiber Exemplar G J Long Golden Egg G B Ott Governor Gray It N Smith Jabot II P Headley Kootenay J N Camden Mud Sill Woodford Buckner Meridian U V Carman Outlan W Clay Premier T C Mc ¬ Dowell St Aioysius M Doyle St Heller J N Camden Sebago W H Laudeman Shameen G J Long LongL L E Standefer of Wetaskiwin Alberta who bought the stallion Yorkshire Lad and nine other thoroughbreds here last week is a native of Texas who has made a big financial success in Canada the past eight years Mr Staudefer as a youth rode quarter races for his father in the Lone Star State In his young manhood he became a cowboy rode tlie range in Texas and Montana and in 1JOi drifted across the border into the new Canadian country with a small bunch of ponies From this beginning he has 10000 acres of land jn the province of Albnrta It is well stocked witli cattle and much of it is under cultivation This is his debut into the ranks of breeders and owners of thoroughbreds His love for the sport of racing and the inclination of Ills neighbors in the new province for the same pastime prompted his consideration of the field for racing to the end that he became convinced that within the next ten years Alberta and Saskatchewan will have many selfsustaining race tracks and so to be among the first in the breeding industry up that way he came hero and selected ten head of horses that are to form the nucleus of his breeding estab ¬ lishment Souiu of them are first to be raced They will be trained by George K Allen who has raced horses In England and the middle west for a number of years
