NOTES OF THE TURF Trainer John Whalen has gone to Garnett S C with four twoyearolds and eleven yearlings belong ¬ ing to August Belmont BelmontL L A Jackson who rode at Oakland for many yean has retired from the saddle and is now en ¬ gaged as a blacksmith at Chieo Cal CalThe The California courts will pass upon the owner ¬ ship of Metropolitan which has been racing at Oak ¬ land in the colors of W M Cain Baron Alvo von Alvenselben from whom Mr Cain acquired the colt in British Columbia chsinis that the animal is still his property and sent Phil Reilly to Oakland to take possession of him himCharles Charles Casey who is training1 at Oakland ran away from school at the age of twelve in New York City and cast his lot with the Dwyer brothers as an exercise boy He later went with S C Hil dretli and gathered a deal of knowledge of the thoroughbred from that skillful trainer Casey has done some riding and has been connected with the sport for twentytwo years although he is but thir ¬ tyfour years old oldEd Ed Whyte trainer for R J Mackenzie is forty years old and lias been around horses for twentysix years during which time he has been with but three establishments He started out when fifteen years of age with P Lorillard who won the Epsom Derby with Iroquols an Americanbred horse He was exercise boy and a flat and overthejumps rider ami was fairly successful His next engagement was with William Hendrie with whom he stayed for eighteen years as a trainer During that time he win the Futurity In 1898 with Martimas In 1903 he was engaged by R J Mackenzie and Is with him yet Mr Whyte was Iwrn at Hamilton Canada
