THE PARI-MUTUELS AT TORONTO. Concerning tic pari-niuiuol system of betting. •rate* had its initial trial at Toronto last Saturday, the Toronto Mole makes the following comment: "The new method of speculation Installed at Wood bine and undergoing its trial in circumstances calculated to thoroughly try its possibilities was a pronounced success. Of course, the opi ration of a system new to the public and fas a large extent also to the operators, must naturally develop some difficnl-ties on so l.ig a day as the occasion of the Plate race, but all these will be remedied by experience on both sides and smooth working order will quickly be acquired. There were some ]i lays and the crowd ing inseparable from a large attendance of people who- WHllted to see how it worked, even though they might not be doing anything with it. Making allowance for these things, there was but one conclusion. that Hie new method is immensely superior to the olf, and liookmaking is gone, never to retain to the big tracks. All the other Canadian Racing Aasocla-lions clubs will have their installation complete for next si-asons racing. The reaaoaa tor the public favor of the mutuels tire various, and all are strong. The new system is neither offensive nor expensive, and it is vastly more profitable to those whose judgment in selecting winners is correct. "The machines have altered the complexion of other important matters, too. The camp follower and the i Pint are eliminated and evidence of that can be v foajal in the hotels and public places of the city. I bean parasites, whoso absence proves they were no part of racing, have furmshed the opponents of the sport with most of their ammunition in the past. The regular and the plunger have no place under the new regime and the credit bettor cannot do business. Perhaps the greatest recommendation it has with the pontic at large is that the people do their speculation among themselves, with no third party In corral exorbitant profits for doing the brokerage, and with no Intermediary having an Interest in the result. The machine cats nothing which horse wins."
