* + AMERICA OWMERS WHO WON ,000 OR MORE DURING 1911 +K 4. In Ihe matter of owners whose horses won for them an aggregate of ,000 or more thore was a falling iff from lgg in Kilo to 127 in 1011. There was also a corresponding decrease in the gross sum of money divided by such owners to the extent of the significant sum of 58,809. The descent from the flourishing conditions of a few years Iwck to the present sharply contrasting state of affairs financial is well expreaaed iu the following presentment of the case: Aggregate Won. Missouri. California. Tennessee, fexas and Louisiana, as well as strict legal repression and oppression hi Illinois and Indiana. No owner • an now indulge in dreams of a fortune to be won in a single successful year. The faithful turfman of the present time race their horses for love of the sport, well content it track earnings are sufficient to defray t tide expenses. Samuel . Hildnth was the leading owner of 1911, just as he was in 1910 and 1:K»! . In again securing liit: this exalted position as a turfman ois good borses won for him less than a third of what they aaaasseu iu 1910. His eel gnd staying three year old. Zeus, was his principal money earner with 3,900 to his Credit. Then in order his other principal contributors were Hampton Court, Shannon, The Welkin. Little Pal, Bestigouche, Boyal Meteor. Pugghss, Fits Herbert. Novelty. King James. Cold Blade and Woodcraft. The great stats of the stable. Fits Herbert. King James and Novelty, were not raced much. Novelty won M5, contrasting illy with his 2,630 won in 1910. At the close of the racing season Hildreth sold his entire stable to Charles Kohler and it has been stated that its best horses are to In- sent to England to he laced in 1102. with Hildreth acting as their trainer. Bat the borses are still in this country. The apparent lesttlt of this sale is to eliminate Hildreth from American lacing, for a time at least. Coincident with the loss of Hildreth is the retirement of James K. Keene from American racing. In 1911, for the first time in many years, his colors were absent from our tracks, but a small stable raced for him successfully ill Kngland. As out leading owner iu 1905, 1906, 1!H7 and l!»0s and the winner in 1!H7 of the greatest sum ever won in one year by any owner in any country, Mr. Keene-- fame as an owner is wi rid-wide and his absence from our racing creates a void hard to till. One deplorable result and feature is the impending loss to our breeding interests through the probable dispersal of his magnificent Caatleton Stud. Next to Mr. Hildreth in the list of successful owners of 1911 was the Tennessee turfman. John W, Schorr, who finished fifth in l.tlO. K. T. Wilson, who was second in 1910, brought up in third place and K. F. Carman, third in 1110. was fourth in 1!11. The western tuifman and breeder. Barney Behrelber, whose horses won 0,358 in 1010. finished well down in the list with but 5,081. Fifth and sixth in the list respectively. George Odoru and W. J. Yanke did relatively aboal as well as thev did in 1010. A. It. 1-BBOBl was sixth ill 1910 and seventh in 1911 and. in some respects, enjoyed a good racing year, the satisfac lion that comes from grand displays of speed by borsea of his own breeding compensating for disappointments in regard to New York racing. W. It. Carsons horses won seventy-four races and in that particular he led our owners. H. G. Bedwell finishing second with seventy one races.
