CONSISTENT KOOTKNAY YIXS SPEEDY SON OF BEN STROME SCORES HIS NINTH VICTORY OF JUAREZ MEETING. Has Started Seventeen Times and Has Been Unplaced in Only Three Races — Important Changes in the Betting Ring, El Paso. Tex.. January 26.— J. I.. Brawns Den Sttome gelding. Kooteaay, has fairly earned the title of the most c insistent horse racing at Juarez this season. When he won the handicap today from Laekrose and Pride of Lismore, it marked his ninth Victory in seventeen stalls, in only three of which did he finish unplaced. Pride of Lismore, as :s bia usual custom, set a fast pace, but K. otenay picked him up in the stretch and ran away from him in I lie final six-te. utii to win with ease from Lack/use. The latter, finishing fast, outgamed the quitting Pride of Lismore at tin- end. Kootenays victory was an e-i.eiingly popular one with the assemblage, which far eclipsed any one days attendance during the present meeting, including holidays. There was a considerable change in the batting ring. Joseph Scbreiber took his book off. and Frank .1. Grefer, who baa been booking in oonjune ;ion with George Rose, took the stand vacated by Mr. Schrelber. The Applegates, father and son, also joined the forces of the layers, the younger Applegate having tormerly been with the Shu Iber book. Mart Demerest, the well known trotting nor*. driver and me ot the heaviest speculators in racing at present, arrived here today and will remain for tin- real of the season. Frank W. Smith, secretary of the Cocur dAb-ue Fair and Bacing Association, is on the ground. Mr. Smith will endeavor to interest horsemen in the northern meeting and will remain here for a week.
