+ — -+ STAKE ENTRIES FORESHADOW GREAT RACING IN KENTUCKY i a , i ! J I ; 1 I i i i i i i •*• 1 — — — — ■ Cincinnoti. .. March 10. — The entry list to the stakes to be decided during the coming meeting of the I/atoiii.-i Jockey club :s exceedingly gratifying, total of 534 nominations having been received to Hie -ix .vent-, representing an average of over 89 io a stake. This is a certain indication that racing if good class will be seen at the old Milldale course ihis spring, and the promise is emphasized by the petaOBBBei of the owners who have made nominations to the -ix events. The Derby drew thirty-four nominations and on paper it looks as if it will really prove to be a contest of high type, as among those named are Worth, the champion t wo-yettr-old of 1911; Sprite, the speedy rillv belonging to II. K. Knapp: T. C. McDowells blah Clasa colt. The Mana :it: Sonada. Cab-shy Woodfords sterling colt, and Preananption, a frequent winner in the colors of I. ini.-s MacManus. The Cincinnati Trophy, Ihe two-year. ld feature, drew 141 entries. General Manager .I hn Baehanetster, was in the city for a few days going over the entries and lie expressed himself as greatly ph-ased with tin returns as foreshadowing great things for the spring inciting. Tin only question unanswered is the Dialling date, which the Kentucky State B firing Commission will settle soon. He announces thai the number - of entries in the Juvenile Stakes surpasses any number of entries made in the other feature races. One . hundred and nineteen have qualified for the Juvenile » Stakes, the distance of which will be five furlongs, the winner to be sold to the highest bidder. The j jockey club will add ,000 to this race, as it t does in every stake to l e run this spring. One hun bed have qualified for the I.ashford Manor t Stakes, four and one-half furlongs. Hallenbeck, the owner of Worth, the Derby favorite, has offered Mr. Bradley 110,000 for this youngster. With the 102-day meeting at Juarez scheduled to 1 end on Sunday. March 21. the turfmen who have spent the winter there are either hastening to fhurchill Downs for the spring race meetings la Kentucky, or are preparing to leave that war-stricken region for other points. Having had an exeep-I lionally successful season at the course under M. .1. Winns management in Mexico, the horse owners are in good lranie of mind for their spring and summer campaigns. Already the advance guard is leaving Juarez and by April 1 it is expected that many of the hones that raced at .luale/. will be at fhurchill Downs. Douglas Park or Lexington. The first arrival at Churchill Downs from Juarez was Bouroon Bean, T. Collins great son of Star Snoot. This four year old demonstrated at Juarez on Febraary 21 thai he is a grand race horse. He ran a mile in 1:37% and had Jockey Taplin riddeu him out it is safe to say that the American record of 1:37% weald have been broken. Bourbon Beaus perform auce has been surpassed on a circular track but once. That was al Santa Anita track. Los Angeles. De-cember 22. 100S. when Centre Shot, then a three-year- ld and carrying 105 pounds, ran the mile in 1:37%. With this exception, Bourbon Beaua mils i at Juaiez has never been beaten and in the long history of racing but tight other horses ever ran as fast a mile. These performances were at Churchill Downs, Lexington, Harlem, Saratoga, Belmont Park, Seattle and LOS Angeles. Boarbon Beau is eligible to start at the Downs ■ in both the Clark and fhurchill Downs Handicap-. Mr. Collins probably will enter him In the four-mile Kentucky Endurance stakes to be decided next fall. J. L. Brown is coming to the spring meeting at Churchill Downs with the consistent Enfield, pow six rears old. Enfield, like Bourbon Beau, is a son of Star Shoot. His record is interesting, being as follows: Amount Year. Age. Sts. 1st. 2d. 3d. Inp. Won. 1908 2 23 ;? Bj 4 11 $ 1,378 ir»oo :: 37 in 8 I 10 4,890 1910 t ns 12 4 12 io :. m 101 1 B oS IB 10 0 7 5.000 1913 0 5 .3 0 2 0 762 Totals to.. 141 46 27 .10 38 5,042 The Virginia Legislature, having failed to pass the Stephenson anti-gambling bill, designed particularly to outlaw horse racing in that state, the .laniostow al trick will open its meeting April s, foe the next two years at least. As a result of the opening Of racing at Jamestown, Marty Yourell. a Steeplechase Jockey who resides in Louisville, has signed I contract io ride this year for Ivan Fox. of Philadelphia. Mr. Fox has several tlmbertoppers, among mem Duffield and Alfred Noble. Mr. Fox owned Dinna Ken. which be sold to S. C. Hildreth for ,000. This horse was shipped during the past Week to Fiance. Miller Henderson will be one of the early arrivals at fhurchill Downs, after a fairly successful season at Juarez. Henderson and Began will, this spring and summer, race the smallest atahlr they have had in several years. It will -onsist of just half a dozen horses. Henderson and Bogaa Nnight no yearlings last season, so have no two-year-olds in the siring this year. The firm now has at ! xington the six year old gelding. Snap, and the trio of three, year-elds, Bl Vera, 1ighting Hope an l Absurd. Absurd, which has never startil. is a brother to G. M. Odoms noted mare. Follie Levy, The others in the Henderson and Hogan outfit are Winning Widow and fockspur. Charles D. Bay, the owner of Amoret, which has won sev ii races out of bis last eight starts at Charleston, writes that he has parted Company with trainer Bellew. Jack Braaaoa, of Booger Red fame. is now handling the Ray racers. It is virtually settled that turfmen will have to depend this spring upon the meetings to he held iii Kentucky, at Jamestown, la Canada and at Coeur dAlene. it looks as if Sam Hildreth knew what be was doing win n he shipped his Stable of stars to France. The action of Mr. Hildreth Indicates that he had inside information that there would lie no favorable racing legislation at Albany. A New York special says: --it is also an accepted fact among men identified with the goeerasaeat ot tin-lurf In the State of New York that the plan to Introduce, several bills relieving the race track directors snd defining the law against so called hook-making without writing." has been abandoned. The raring interests are not saying a word just now. but certain members of the Legislature have placed themselves on record with the statement that the re-lntrodoctloH of last years Gittina bills by Assemblyman fuvillier has not been Officially approved either by the racing or breeding interests. In fact. according to the story going the rounds. Assembly-man fuvillier. while undoubtedly aincen In his efforts to help racing, lias really thrown obstacles in the way of up state citizens, who as a result have decided not to re introduce measures that would permit the treks to open while at the same time preventing open rambling. A leading member of the Semite said yesterday: There is no chance for the passagi of racing bills this year. The fuvillier measures have stirred up so much opposition that it is better to let the matter drop than allow any other racing measures to be voted down. it is generally understood that the Jockey flub, which bas not taken an active part in laying plans, ims decided to remain passive for at least another season No attempt will be made to race three days a week at any of the local tracks, nor will Saratoga trj to resume the usual session in Aagnst. The amateur hunt races will go on as usual, but the meetings are few and far between." .lust why s. c Hildreth objects to racing in Ai erica, with th New York tracks closed, I I altogethei i lain. In !! » In made entries In all ,, the stake events at Churchill Downs, but at the last moment he decided not to come west. Incidentally, ii may he stated that ■ largi number of turfmen were glad enoagh thai he del not invade the west.
