PRESUMPTION IN TRAINING JAMES MACMANTTS CHIEF CANDIDATE FOB KENTUCKY DERBY DOING WELL WorkWatchers at Louisville Favorably Impressed Impressedwith with Progress of His Preparation Ocean OceanBounds Bounds Sister a Kentucky Oaks Eligible Louisville Ky April 4 Presumption is a Derby candidate that grows in favor with the railbirds as he is training for the big race as well as any of the candidates He was a consistent sturdy per ¬ former last year and that in some measure accounts for his popularity this spring The MacManus stable has another candidate in George Oxnard and he also looks good He is liked on account of being the eon of imported Islington sire of KInley Mack the only horse that ever won the Suburban and Brooklyn Handicaps in the same year Then loo It is the impression that George Oxnard will stay the Derby course well as in his races last season as a twoyearold he ran somewhat as did Governor Gray at the same age coming from far back and finishing fast These two horses in the hands of as callable a trainer as O A Blanchi deserve a lot of respect in the Derby calculations as that trainer has been successful with horses in r cent years yearsScores Scores of horses worked at Churchill Downs and Douglas Park today but no fast time was recorded The going at both tracks was much Improved Prac ¬ tically every horse in training here was on the courses tbis morning All the Derby candidates in ¬ cluding The Manager presumption George Oxnard Gtiaranola and Patruche were out early and each mad an Impressive track appearance as all seemed to IKS training In the best of form The twoyear olds were especially busy and several were sent threeeighths in about 42 The older performers out today for long gallops which especially caught the eyes of the railbirds were Bourbon Beau Round the World Follie Levy and Firemam Many horses sit both tracks are now in readinessyXor fast work a fid by Saturday it will be possible to Accord some trials run in creditable time J K Walnwrights stable which arrived here from Charleston In charge of trainer Fred Luzader numbers nine horses In addition to the old racers High Private Trance Al Muller Royal Captive and All Red there are four twoyearolds in the string TUey are High Star a chestnut colt by Star Shoot La Puccllc El Gallo brown colt by Dick Finnell Paradise Won A J Gorey bay colt by Miller Marie Decca black colt by AllanarDale Dolly Mack High Star was a winner at Charles ¬ ton Trainer Luzader has signed for Mr Wain wrigbt a threeyears contract on the apprentice jockey M McDonough The boy did his first riding at Charleston and can ride as light as eightyfive pounds N Kennedy is still with the Wainwright stable but cannot ride under 115 pounds Tills will probably be his last season in the saddle unless lie concludes to go abroad where the weight scales ir higher than in this country Mr Wainwrights two noted mares La Pucelie and Polly Prim both have yearlings now The one out of Polly Prim Is a colt by Orlando while La Pacelle has a filly by O dt u La Pucelie will have no foal this year but has been mated with Ornament while Polly Prim will sapir foal to Plaudit and then will be mated with Star Shoot These are the only mares In the Wainwright stud studW W J Speirs has returned from Latonia where liv was called to attend the funeral of John G Weaver his fatherinlaw and father of the well known turfman Jack Weaver The elder Weaver wa secretary of the Covington Water Works and was seventylive years of age Mr Si cirs while at Latonia visited the track but says there are only a few horses in training at that place The chief string there is that of Dave Henry who has a big hunch of twoyearolds in charge for Barney Schrei lx r Trainer Heury will bring most of these young ¬ sters to the Downs within the next week or ten days They include some of the best of the SciircIljer twoyearolds twoyearoldsDan Dan Lchan has bought from Ed Corrigan the last two thoroughbreds owned by that veteran turfman They arc both yearling fillies by Marta Santa one Itiiiig out of Lcla B by Griffon and the other out of Sister Frank by Deceiver Mr Corrigan is still at Magnolia Springs where he spent the winter Mr Lehan has two other yearlings both of which he bred one being a black filly by Marta Santa Mfss Konise by Esher and the other a bay filly by Col Jim Douglas Sweet Fraeta by Albert AlbertJames James S Everman will arrive here from Charles ¬ ton within the next few days Among the cracks in his string is Forward regarded as the best two voarold at the South Carolina track this season Forward Is the property of the Woodford County breeder John H Morris who trained Azra when that colt won the Derby for George J Long For ¬ ward is a halfbrother to the three good racers Fore ton Forehead and Ida May Woodford Clay is said to have a promising Oaks candidate In the filly Ocean Blue a sister to Ocean Hound Mr Clayhas no Derby eligible this season as he unfortunately failed to nominate his good colt Kuckhorn for that event He made two other viarling entries In the race but they were not of Derby Quality and so he declared them out long since Ocean Bound is said to be training well this nrln and will be barring accident a certain Starter in the Clark Handicap which will be run iere early in tbc spring meeting which opens on Saturday May 11 Derby day dayIn In the last few days nothing officially has been lw ird from the stable of H C Hallenbeck now at Aiken S C Secretary Lyman II Davis however was informed some tjme ago by trainer Frank Taylor that the string
