CHIEF OF ALL ENGLANDS MEETINGS American Horses Win but Two Races at Ascot Sweeper II s Defeats English Turf Statistics London June 24 The Ascot meeting of this year lacked none of the characteristic features that annu ¬ ally serve to make it in many ways the greatest of all turf reunions The patronage of King George and his family attracted fashion to the limit and particularly on Cup day the display of elaborately attired feminine beauty was almost bewildering and a picture long to be retained in memory The racing was up to tlie Ascot standard and that is saying about all that could be said From the viewpoint of the public the lacking feature was the failure of Stedfast to meet Prince Palatine in the Cup It was decided to run Stedfast for the Hardwicke Stakes only having in view extremely valuable en ¬ gagements ahead As matters now stand Stedfast and Prince Palatine are not booked to meet until the running of the 5O000 Eclipse Stakes at San down Park Friday July 10 The opposition to these two giants of present day racing will it is under ¬ stood include the Epsom Derby winner Tagalie She is now fresh and good and may prove trouble ¬ some to the two fouryearold stars named Prince Palatine won the Cup in the faultless fashion of a really great race horse with the game but diminu ¬ tive French mare Basse Pointe in nearest but fruitless pursuit Although having no chance against Prince Palatine she is a little wonder in respect to courage and weight carrying ability over long distances The Two Thousand Guineas winner Swoexr II was twice licaten finishing second to Tracery in the St James Palace Stakes on Thursday and to Hector in the Fiftyninth Triennial Stakes on Friday In the latter race he was attempting to concede Hector seventeen pounds and failed in a hard task but confirmed his Two Thousand form by giving Jaeger live rounds and a beating for second place Hector is a smart colt that will win more races and it was no disgrace to be beaten by him at such a big difference in weight In the St James Palace Stakes Sweeper II carried 120 pounds to 11 on Tracery but the latter is now estimated to be probably the best threeyearold of the year and would evidently have won easily at even weights weightsThe The victory of Tracery referred to and tlia of Borrow In the Wokingham Stakes were the only successes falling to American horses but Whisk Broom usually a reliably quick beginner may have lost the Hoyal Hunt Cup through a lamentably bad start by which lie was deprived of any chance However lie ran a great race so much so that top weight in all handicaps at a mile or less is inevita ¬ bly his future nortion Borrow won the AVokingham Stakes in such brilliant fashion as to confirm the truth of the rumor that he had fully recovered from his incapacitating sickness of last year and also re ¬ gained the speed that made him victor in the Middle Park Plate and other highclass races when a two yearold His return to good racing form is import ¬ ant to the Whitney Stable which so far has been none too successful especially in the department of twoyearolds from which so much was expected Of these Miramichi ran third In the Coventry Stakes Mix Up second in the Sixtieth Triennial Stakes and Harmonicon second in the Windsor Castle Stakes The stable possesses some grand appearing and heav ¬ ily engaged twoyearolds which have not as yet been sent to the post and it seems almost incredible that some of them may not yet credit Mr Whitney with one or more of the many ricli events for twoyear olds to be decided later on The American filly Melody made her first start this year in the valua ¬ ble Coronation Stakes for threeyearold fillies and rn second to the splendid Polkerris She has not grown much in height but has thickened and her debut augurs well for her in future engagements engagementsIn In returns to owners the meeting was a record breaker In tirst money alone the sum distributed among winning owners was 20253750 for four days of racing an average of over 50000 x r day In this as In other features Ascot stands alone aloneThe The Great Hamburg Handicap two miles value 5000 run for on Friday last at HamburgHorn resulted in the success of Messrs K and A Utz schneiders fouryearold colt Cairo Archibald up from Count Revcntlows fiveyearold horse Laps Shurgold Count Henckels fouryearold colt Savoy the First and twelve others The winner is an Americanbred son of Greenan formerly Mr J II Houldsworths out of Kate Kopje The lastnamed was bought at one of Mr J It Hagglns annual sales In Germany and cost together with her then foal Cairo only 50 On the same day The Whin a twoyearold daughter of Galtee More out of Lily Asphodel by Hampton won the Hamburg Criterium five furlongs value 3750 from live others She too was ridden by Archibald ArchibaldJ J B Watts has been appointed trainer to the Gradltz Stud in Germany a position held for some years by Reginald Day a brotherinlaw of Watts who is returning to Newmarket it is understood Watts is a son of the fatuous John Watts who four times won the Derby viz on Merry Hamp ton In 1887 Sainfortli in 1800 Ladas in 1801 rnd he was on Persimmon two years later Young Watts was apprenticed to Ills father and oh the lat ters death in 1902 the indentures were taken over by the kings trainer H Marsh In the following season Watts won the Jockey Club Cup at the Hough ton Meeting on Mead in the royal colors and was presented by his late majesty with a breastpin as a memento of that victory Increasing weight com ¬ pelled Watts to relinquish the saddle and he trained at Newmarket for three or four seasons with suc ¬ cess He had charge of Wlllaura before the death ef his owner Lord Derby subsequently purchasing the colt for 15000 15000M M Prat the owner of Mirska the Oaks winner is a keen enthusiast on breeding and his training establishment is at La Croix St Ouen where Arthur Watkins trains his horses lie purchased Mtisa with her foal at foot in England In 1909 for 20000 M Cheri Ilalbronn acting on his behalf M Prat is a gentleman of staunch integrity and he has been known to lodge complaints about his own horse in a race which he thought interferred with others othersBronzlno Bronzlno which it was at one time hoped would be among the runners for the Ascot Gold Cup has broken down and has been scratched for all engage ¬ ments mentsAscot Ascot racing served to advance Lord Derby to sec ond place in the list of winning owners of this year and having so many good horses to battle for his stable It is quite within tho bounds of probability that he may attain the leadership before many weeks pass by For the time being Tagalles tri ¬ umphs suffice to keep Mr Raphael in first place Of American owners Mr H B Duryea is now sixth In the list while Mr H P Whitney has advanced to eleventh and Mr A Belmont has gained a place in the list of winners of 10000 or more To date the standing of such winners is isWinning Winning have to be made to the table of the lead ¬ ing winning stallions for the current season and to ¬ days list is strengthened by the appearance for the first time of Persimmon whose son Prince Palatine so gallantly won the Gold Cup upon the Royal Heath Spearmint and Santol Desmond following a fortnights absence reappears to increase the rep ¬ resentation of St Simon The results at Ascot brought no improvement to either Cyllene or Broom ¬ stick the latter of whom Is now pressed closely by St Frusquin but the most noteworthy advance Is that effected by Chaucer Stedfasts victory in the Hardwicke Stakes carries Chaucer into second place The statistics given below may be left to tell their own tale for apart from Thrush and Ayrshire the remainder for the most part have been stationary The
