T H STEVENS DIES AT BUTTE BUTTEButte Butte Mont August 19 Thomas T Stevens a native of Kentucky and one of the oldest thorough ¬ bred racing men in America died here this morning the cause of death being pneumonia Mrs Stevens and Judge K C Hopper were at the liedsidn when death took place The body will be forwarded to Lexington Ky for interment Lexington Ky August 19 News of the death of Thomas H Stevens at Biilte Mont this morn ¬ ing was received here with many expressions oC genuine regret at the passing of that veteran turf ¬ man Mr Stevens had lived his alloted three score and ten years lie was born at Boonsboro Madison County in March 1842 He was until his speoch was impaired about a year ago by a form of paraly ¬ sis a hardy and vigorous man He had buried two wives and had married a third who was with him at the time of his death He leaves eleven sons and daughters eight by his tirst wife and three by the second Messrs John and James Stevens both wellknown trainers are two of his sons am Mrs Fletcher K Driver wife of another wellkuowi turfman is a daughter Mr Stevens began his career as a racing man by riding quarter horses for his father The order of the sport was touch and go and every fellow take care of himself Young Stevens knew the game thoroughly and there were none better at it iu bis day His aptitude at quarter racing was the foundation of the comfort ¬ able competence out of which he lived well until his death He had an enduring reputation for fair dealing on and oT the turf turfMr Mr Stevens owned many good horses in his time beginning with Tom Barlow and including Farragot which lie owned in partnership with C B Oilman of this city the Oaks mares Florlmore and Wary and Buckwa Wahoo and Buokra of older days and more recently Siddons witli which lie won the Thorn ¬ ton Stakes of four miles at Oakland and also the Waterhonse Cup II was his fortune to twice take this race the second time with Rainns and the last year it was run he was second with Azo For W H Laiidemau he trained Palestine and other good ones and for the late Patsy Mack the good horse Poteen PoteenTraining Training longdistance runners was his forte After Wadsworths racing days were at an end Mr Stevens bought him from Col Bob Holloway and had him in the stud for several successful yeara at his Walnut Hill Farm which he sold a couple of years ago
