LOUIS H EZELL PASSES AWAY A man well known to Chicago patrons of racing in the days when the sport flourished here unob ¬ structed is reported to have died about July 31 at the farm of Sam Lazarus In Texas This was Louis H Ezell a quiet taciturn man and a really skilful trainer of the old school Unheralded and practi ¬ cally unknown here ho turned up with a few horses at the old West Side Park in 18S9 when it was conducted by Corrlgan Waldo With Tudor Thomas J Rusk Clara Moore and Leman he won races that year but the star of his stable was a wirey dark bay almost brown gelding by Falsetto Crucifix named St Albans With this horso hu dealt the local betting rings several hard blows In some way a report became current that St Al ¬ bans ordinary diet was milk and he became known as the milkfed horse and as such was an object of public curiosity and in consequence had such a following that when he won quite extensive injury was usually wrought to the feelings and bankrolls of the iKxikmakers Whether there was any real foundation for the milk story is doubtful but St Albaus was not a good eater and like all horses of delicate and capricious appetite was somewhat un ¬ certain iu his mnning When on good terms with himself he was a really good race horse horseAs As long as racing was carried on in Chicago after his advent here Ezell was annually represented by a stable of horses usually selling platers but acca sionally of better class His most conspicuous suc ¬ cess iu Chicago was when he won the valuable Wheeler Handicap at Washington Park with Flying Torpedo in 1902 When racing was abandoned in this city he went west and raced a few horses with indifferent success over the California and mountain circuit tracks Of late years but little has been heard of him in a racing way Last whiter he raced Mamac Martin Casey Menelik and Yo Puedo at Juarez or strictly speaking his brother did for him his health being too frail to permit him t exercise the cares and labors of training iu person
