SUIT AGAINST NEW TRACK WELCOMED BY MANAGEMENT A suit which is welcomed by the management of the Mineral Springs Jockey Club whose inaugural meeting is to begin on Saturday next at its new track near Porter Ind was instituted yesterday plaint before Judge McMahon of the LakePorter Circuit Court at Valparaiso alleging that the track is to be used as a place for bookmaking and pool selling by means of revised methods intended to evade the gambling laws of Indiana The attorney general alleges in his complaint that a secret system of employedThe letting by means of cards is to be employed The suit Is filed against the Racing Foundation Corporation of America Arminlus F Knptt Gary William M Daly Valparaiso Clarence Bretsch Gary John A Gavin Hammond James S Sebree South Dakota Peter Crumpacker Hammond Lemuel l arrow Laiwrte J R Matone Valparaiso Fred S Garter Gary and T W Engelbart Gary The coni plaint asserts that the corporation has never nlndo application to the secretary of state to transact business in Indiana and is therefore proceeding illegally illegallyThe The complaint charges that the corporation is to hold horse races for the purpose of betting gam ¬ bling upon races making wagers Belling pools for making books and has other devices to record or register bets The complaint declares that the defendants have also associated themselves us a partnership known as the Mineral Springs Jockey Club which is the or ¬ ganization actively engaged in the construction of the Porter track The persons named in the com ¬ plaint are all prominent citizens of northern Indiana IndianaA A F Knotts who has been more actlve than any of the others named in promoting the racing de ¬ clared last night that the action taken by the attor ¬ neygeneral Is exactly what the Jnanageinent of the new track desired Inasmuch as It will be the means of clearing up the doubt that has been raised In various newspaper articles emanating from Indi ¬ anapolis as to the ability of the Mineral Springs Jockey Club to carry on its meeting as advertised He expressed himself as supremely confident of the outcome pointing out that it is the Intention of the club not only to proceed strictly in accordance with the laws of Indiana but that It proposes to see that the law is respected by its patron So far as the Racing Foundation is concerned Mr Knotts declared that for the present no attempt will be made by that corporation to do business da thetState ofilnmana Racing Foundation will haye nothing to do wltn the Mineral Springs Jockey Clubs meeting this fall fallSatisfactory Satisfactory progress continues tobe made atjthe new course in preparation for rSaturdays opening More horses arrived yesterday and others will get there today and tomorrow By Saturday there will he over 200 horses on the ground which will be suf ¬ ficient for the opening days of the meeting More are expected once the meeting gets under way There wayThere has been considerable inquiry as to the best route to follow in motoring from Chicago to the new course The management of the track advises that any of the regular automobile roads be taken from the south side of Chicago to Whiting East Chicago or Hammond At Whiting a direct north and south aiito road plainly marked crosses the new Fifth avenue western extension from Gary the eastern continuation of which is the regular Michigan City and South Bend autohighway familiar to tourists A somewhat smoother and newer road although the mileage is greater is by way of Ridge road which connects with South Broadway Gary On reaching Broadway in Gary drivers should turn east on Fifth avenue which carries the tourist through Aetna and Miller from which a southerly detour is made along a plainly K sted autohighway crossing various railroads and running through East Gary old Lake Station from which the main auto course leads easterly along an excellent macadam ¬ ized road plainly marked with new signs This course leads directly into Porter County through the town of Crissman and works steadily east until It crosses the Michigan Central railway and turns east forming the main highway which parallels the Mich ¬ igan Central Railroad immediately to the south A short mn carries the motorist across a small creek from which the road rises on a fairly steep grade to the plateau from which the stables and grandstand of Mineral Springs raee track are plainly visible The south projwrty line of the race track lie directly along tills road which leads directly to Michigan City and South Bend BendLouisville Louisville Ky October 9 Six cars of racers were shipped tonight to Porter Ind to engage in the racing there Some of the owners and the num ¬ ber of their horses are Adair Baker G H Mc Carren Jr 10 B F Guthrie 4 W Hurley 8
