REVIVAL OF CHICAGO RACING TO BE CONSUMMATED TODAY Formerly only second to New York as a racing center It Is now a matter of six years since Chicago has numbered racing among its open air diversions of each spring summer and autumn Due to the enterprise of some good citizens of the neighboring State of Indiana there is to be a resumption of the sport within easy traveling distance of Chicago today Unquestionably there are thousands bore who delight in racing and will give their bearty support to the new venture ventureWhile While long prior to 1884 there was racing over Chicago tracks it was the Inaugural meeting at Washington Park in that year which placed the sport in its best estate here iear by year after ¬ wards the American Derby grew In importance value and popularity until it was easily the fore ¬ most annual event for threeyearolds of this country and an advertisement of the greatness and enterprise of Chicago of inestimable benefit to this city When Washington Iark racing was at the height of its prosperity and popularity it was a magnet that annu ¬ ally attracted tlKiusunds of summer tourists of wealth to abide here for a space to the financial profit of Chicagos iiiorchsntn hotels restaurants and other lines of a great citys pnrsuits On an occasion arising onu of Chicagos eminent merchants gave it as his careful estimate that State street merchants alone aniiuallysold not less than IfSOOOUO worth of goods lieeause of the fashionable display attendant on the running of the American Derby It is a quite conservative estimate lo say that the abolishment of racing hero has caused the loss of not less than 0 JOOIX per annum to Chicago tradesmen of one sort and another anotherThe The sport wiis Immensely popular here and In its best days attracted a great daily attendance American Derby day stood by itself and authenti ¬ cally was patronized by attendance larger than witnessed the running of any othor race in the United States But aside from this event tlie at ¬ tendance at Washington Park Hawthorne Harlem and Worth was so great as to assure almost un ¬ bounded prosperity to the various local racing or ¬ ganizations The racing was ofthe highest class and embellished with great performances by such equine celebrities as Modesty General Monroe Volaute Emperor of Norfolk Yo Tamhien Kingston Marion C Morello Rudolph Spokatuv Proctor Knott Domino Los Angeles Strathmenth Boundless lley el Santa Anita Pink Coat Sidney Lucas Clifford Santlag6 The Picket Highball Robutt Waddolli Favor Dick Welles Tokaiou Kndurance by Right Ban Fox El Six Shooter Runnels Huron Macy Imp Sam Phillips and a host of other shining stars of tho track Assuredly Chicago patrons of the turf were given the best that was to be had In the way of fleet horses striving In noble competitions competitionsIt It is not to be expected that the best horses of the present day will be in action In this first meet lug over the new Indiana track But fairly good horses will be there in abundance and cannot fall to afford pleasing racing If tho meeting in its results comes up to the expectation of its promoters there will be a different story to tell next year In that event there will be an additional wellap ¬ pointed track in Lake County closer to Chicago and a list of stakes for each track will be proffered next spring thnt will be bound to bring the beat horses in western training to tho Indiana meetings At least two of these covering thirty racing days will take place when the Kentucky spring and early summer campaign is over and will provide the only midsummer racing of tho central west This is an important consideration and if valnes provided in stakes and purses are what they should be this period should provo immensely profitable to the stockholders of tho two tracks People who go to the Porter track now cannot expect to find the accommodations of a Washington Iark or Harlem But they will find a plant of great possibilities for tlie future and good enough to meet present condi ¬ tions Lovers or the sport will be content to avail themselves of such conveniences as have been pro ¬ vided feeling compensated for any seeming de ¬ ficiencies by tho pleasure of once more viewing the graceful and gallant thoroughbred in action actionThe The iiostpoueiueut of the opening from last Satur ¬ day until today was fortunate in that it seems to assure tho inauguration of Porter racing in pleasant weather and over a safe track that is sure to be an extremely fast one when well beaten down by the impact of the horses feet feetThe The opening days card is of a calibre that en ¬ sures interesting contests There appears to be abundant material for contention In all the races The track itself is in good condition A steam roller has been employed In going over it during the past few days with good results Its condition may be judged from the fact that Rosturtiuin and Nash Cash worked a half in 50 over it yesterday yesterdayWhile While the plant is still lacking in some things that will be attended to later on everything essen ¬ tial for the opening is in place placeThe The opening race will be run at 2 oclock each day The first of the special trains to the track over the Luke Shore railroad will leave the La Salle Street Station in this city at 12 oclock noon Some changes have been inade in the personell of the officials and the complete roster will be us follows Presiding judge J R Malone associate judge C C IMley starter Richard Dwyer pro John I Day racing secretary and handicapper J S Wallace clerk of the
