ENGLANDS GREAT LONG DISTANCE HANDICAP Warlinghams Easy Success at Long Odds Craganours Middle Park Plate English Turf Statistics London Bug October 21 The Newmarket Sec ¬ ond October meeting settled some importantly pres ¬ sing racing problems notably the Cesarewitch ami the Middle 1ark 1latc This lastnamed event was won iu suck easy fashion by Craganour as to at once dispel any iloubts as to which is our best two yearold The only defeat administered to him was when Uock Flint beat him by a head iu the Mole comb Stakes at the Goodwood meeting As a matter of contrast Cragancur won the Middle Park Plate from start to finish never extended while Uock Flint finished hist or the seven that started However he did not appear well iu the paddock before the rae ami it was obvious to the prac ¬ tised eye that lor some reason lie was not at his best and his running confirmed this His natural spwd kept him in the front rank for a half mile then lie dropped back hopele sly leaving Craganour to go on and win from Shoguli by three lengths the latter being a similar distance before Louvois which barely headed Mr WhltneyV Hiirnumicon out of third place No doubt Cragauour will be a warm antepost Epsom Derby favorite through the coming winter and spring It remains to be seen whether liko that other brilliant son of Desmond L omoud he will prove up to staying th Derby route at tull speed speedThe The Cesartwltch proved a sensational affair For je reason and another it provoked enormous ante post betting and all unusual number of horses were backed to win fortunes The name trf the actual xvianer Warliugham seldom appeared in the quota ¬ tions and outside of such quiet support as he re ¬ ceived from his owner and a few of the latters intimates ho ran unbacked going to tho post at 5 to 1 while it was 11 to 2 aud i Iu 1 respectively against the two favorites Balscaddcn and Tootles Tlie bookmakers as a nilo woil greatlyj but all did not Ret away from the disagreeable necessity of paying over the result Bob Slevler is not in tho habit of allowing his horses to run loose and is credited with having won somewhere between 125 000 and 150000 over the success of his staying Cesarcvittih victor In ixiint of class th Cesari wltch field was one of the most moderate of recent years So dense was the throng in the Birdcage that it was impossible to obtain more than a gliinpseof tho majority of the candidates Nothing was more taking to the eyo than Italicaddon which maintained his position of favorite to the end though hard pressed by both Tootles and Utithlca Whilst Tootles appeared a trllle light and had evidently done plenty of work since Doucaster Rathlca bus never stripped in better fettle bnt Mushroom appeariit to bo a little above himself and sweated remainder of tho journey striding up the hill likj a true stayer WinthoriM then appeared on the scene pass ¬ ing Candytuft and Galafron in the Abingdon Mile Bottom and once he appeared likely to keep Tootles out of second place but the mare pulled out a Me in the last half furlong without ever threatening to lieat Warllngham which had the race won some wiv out the judges verdict being three the former now being fifth in money won and the latter sixth Craganours victory in the Middle Park Plate contributing Importantly to his advancement Thirtythree owners have now won 15COO or more and by hiinsflf but Prince Palatines victory In the Jockey Club Stakes enabled the defunct Persimmon to oust tlie expatriated son of Boua Vista from the first place and no sooner had this been Epsom jockey drew level with his rival the meetings held since have not resulted lu his gaining any advantage Maher in fact Is the first to reach his century which he did yesterday at Newmarket leaving Wootton four points behind Whalley has made some progress during the past week and is not so far in the rear of the leading pair as to make It impossible for him to fight out the finish for ulti ¬ mate first place with one or the other of them In auv case he Is as secure of third position as Clark is of fourth and though the lastnamed lias not had a repetition of the good fortune that attended his riding at Edinburgh and Haydoek Ibirk those who immediately follow him in the record have also little to show for their recent efforts This lot comprises Trigg Wbeatley Foy Bobbins and
