■ L . . i 1 ONLY ONE NEW AMERICAN RECORD MADE DURING 1912 + * It is remarkablt and perhaps significant tbat the racing of tit! li should have keen productive of but one new American record. It has generally happened in preceding years that numerous records have been re- ■ iced s,.as,.n alter season. Daring Ill 1 six new American records were established, which is fairly representative of what had been happening in the years imnu diately preceding". It is true that the record break in-; performances of lull wire at distances at which races are rather infrequent ly inn. as compared with in. records that have survived for years for the distances that figure mest frequently in the racing nan- . grams of the country. The pauciiy of record-breaking performances during the year .just ended may he ascribed to one or in ire causes. To begin with, it may be ;.n aftermath of the wholesale shipment of the cream of American thoroughbreds to Europe to engage in the sport undeV conditions more favorable than those prevailing in the I nited States. While there are still unquestionably high-class horses in this country their numbers have l en sadly reduced. Or, it may be ,that American track records, refined by years of racing, under deereasinj; weights and modern methods of track treatment that permitted marked improvement iu time, have at last reached the point where further changes will !«• trifling. The only American record that was reduced daring tin- year was that for four miles. In 1911 Messenger Boy, in winning the Kentucky Kndui nice Stakes at Churchill Downs, established a new four-mile rcc • id of 7:14.-.. It was Ihis record that Mrs. L. A. Livingstons good mare. Sotemia. in winning this year" renewal of the same s;ake. farther reduced to th.- astonishing time of 7:MMfc. It is generally thought that tiis record has now been established at a figure that will stand for some time to come. Two American records were equaled daring the year. At the Lagoon track, near Salt Lake City. Utah. •in ft, F. .1. crefois two-year-old tilly. Floral Park, gained the distinction of sharing with -Toe Morris the ■ redit for the fastest three and a half furlongs on record by running the distance in 32%. and at fort Brie, lily I. Mrs. L. A. Livingstons five ycai eld son of Ihlrim and Luray. Lovetle, equaled Princess Callaway-ICCOrd or 1:42 for op.- mile and seventy yards, made at Latonia, October L7. Hill. Lovetle carried U5 p anils, as against tuij carried by Princess Callaway. The complete list of American records, revised to the end of 1012. is embraced in the following tabulation: Mat. Borae. A.
