T H WILLIAMS IS HOPEFUL President of Pacific Jockey Club Predicts That Cali ¬ fornia Racing Will Be Revived Thomas II Williams the ruling spirit in Cali ¬ fornia racing has not abandoned hope of a revival o the sport in that state He was recently quoted as follows followsWe We will let New York light it out and then it will be time for us here in California to make a move But 1 will predict that thoroughbred raciut will be reestablished in California within the next few years and probably along the lines worked out iu New York 1 feel that the insane reform wave of the last live years has spent itself We had one Mich in 1889 They are periodical Some result in great good and some do great harm Undoubtedly the day of the bookmaker is over forever Turf wagering in future will be private and personally individual or by the parimutucl In New York the race track owner is still personally liable for any gambling on bis course In time this will be shown unconstitutional and then the met ¬ ropolitan courses will reopen and the sport will be rehabilitated rehabilitatedAll All that is needed for the reopening of the New York tracks according to Mr Bcluiont is the same measure of liberty inside the tracks gales us on the street The New York track owners do not ask for special privileges or exemptions If the public is not in danger of arrest for doing on a raco course what they may do freely and with im ¬ punity In any other place in that great state and if the nice track directors are not liable to arrest because of something which is perfectly legal and of which they have no knowledge anyway then the tracks in New York will open nnd a great pub ¬ lic sport will IK revived It is not unlawful or criminal to bet but under the system of persecu ¬ tion aimed at racing New York people would be imprisoned if they bet on a raco track The Ap ¬ pellate Courts decision lias destroyed that oppres ¬ sion Therefore thu revival of New York racing is at hand Later on it will follow here in Cali ¬ fornia
