SOCIETY FOLK FLOCK TO PIMLICO Patapsco Steeplechase Serves as Great Attractiou Mutucls Well Patronized Baltimore Md May 3 The running of the Pat apsco Steeplechase attracted a big gathering or society folks to Pimlieo this afternoon It was the first opportunity that the hunting set had of wit neising some of the better class of jumpers perform in public and the inlield was crowded with lovers of cross country racing during its running licket of Leave rated as the best steeplechaser of last year was among the eight starters Tho race fur ¬ nished a splendid contest with initiation first at the finish a nose in advance of Ticket of Leave This pair fought it out through the last quarter and although tiring in the last few strides Iliination managed to last just long enough Ticket of Leave made several blunders during the ruuuiug and ouce went to his knees kneesAmos Amos Tlirneys Klelmrne showed a good per ¬ formance in the Stafford purse in winch he over ¬ came much interference and eventually won wiJi plenty in reserve One of the biggest upsets of the afternoon was furnished by Wooden Shoes which was heavily backed to beat a band of ordinary two yearolds in the second race Mondon was not alert lit the post and when the barrier was sprung got away in a tangle Wooden Shoes closed a big gap but could never get to Bulgar which won by a couple of lengths after leading all the way liie Idol although tiring badly lasted long enough to beat the fast closing favorite for second place placeFourteen Fourteen maidens went to the iiost in the opening dash and the winner turned up In Slim Princess which came from behind and finished with a rush Burning Daylight a supposed good thing from the Turney stable raced indifferently A tremendous gathering was present the attend ¬ ance being up to the Saturday figures of last sei 6on Speculation was keen and the mutnels han ¬ dled something over 150000 during the afternoon James Milton left for his home in Dallas Tex tonight to remain a week with ids folks before I returning north to take up his duties as starter on the Metropolitan tracks tracksCongressman Congressman Dupree of Louisiana and the Russian Ambassador were among those who witnessed the racing this afternoon The Russian Ambassador has reserved lx x 27 for the entire meeting meetingA A R London secretary of the Hamilton and Ottawa Jockev Clubs arrived this morning ami will remain until Monday In the interest of the Stakes to be run at those meetings W P Fraser of tho Ontario Jockey Club is expected here tomorrow on the same mission All of the stakes to be run on the Canadian circuit will close on Monday MondayRiciiard Riciiard T Wilson president of the Saratoga Association made his first appearance this after ¬ noon and thoroughly enjoyed tho sport
