GIVE PROOF OF SINCERITY NEW YORK RACING ASSOCIATIONS ANXIOUS TO SEE LAW STRICTLY ENFORCED August Belmont Sends Letter to District Attorney and Sheriff Offering to Pay Expenses of Deputy DeputySheriffs Sheriffs for Belmont Park Service New York May 20 August Belmont chairman of the Jockey Club sent the following letter to District Attorney Wysong of Nassau County today todayIHar IHar Sir The Westchester Racing Association In conjunction witii the llrooklyn Jockey Club is lo hold i series of race meetings at Helmoiit Park beginning May 0 and ending July 5 lllt llltIn In order that every precaution may lie taken to prevent violations of the criminal law in regard to gambling we have forwarded to the sheriff of Nassau county a letter of which we enclose you a copy copyIt It is the desire of the associations as therein stated that you should give the sheriff such legal advice as may be necessary to enable him to in ¬ telligently and properly enforce the law against gambling while these races are being conducted He should appoint as deputy sheriffs to attend to the races men of such standing in the community that they may be relied upon to enforce the law We are prepared to render yon every assistance in our power Believe me with regards Very respectfully yours Signed AUGUST BELMONT BELMONTFor For the Associations AssociationsThe The letter to Sheriff Demott is similar to that sent the district attorney in great part and ends with The associations desiro your aid and cooperation in the prevention and suppression of all acts at these meetings constituting criminal offenses against the provisions of the law forbidding poolselling book making or any other kind of gambling gamblingWe We request that you have present at these meetings depntv sheriffs who shall be men of such character and standing in the community that they may be relied upon to enforce the law Understand Ing that you have no funds for the purpose of em ¬ ploying men of the kind that we desire the associa ¬ tions ure prepared to pay the expense incident to their employment The district attorney of your county has been notified of the fact that these races are to be conducted at Belmont Park and we have requested him to give you such legal advice and aid sis may l e necessary to enable you to intelligently and properly enforce the law during the meeting meetingMr Mr Belmont received a cable today advising him of the victory of Tracery in the Iturwell Plate one mile and a half at Newmarket and that the beaten horses Included Jackdaw and Stedfast second and third This would indicate that the St Leger winner Is in g od form It is Mr Belmouts special desire to win the Ascot Gold Cup on June 19 He will visit England and Franco so as to be at Epsom on June 4 Derby Day lie has not yet decided to run Vulcain in the Derby
