SARATOGIANS STRONGLY FAVOR RACING Saratoga N Y July 17 The merchants and citizens of this place are raising by subscriptions a considerable sum of money that will be offered to the Saratoga Association for the Improvement of the Breed of Horses for a special race during the meeting which is to be held here throughout the month of August Local sentiment is strongly in favor of the sport President Kelly of the Village Hoard voiced the general views of the people of Saratoga in a statement that lie made a day or two ago as follows followsThere There is tm iiuestion in my mind but that the coming season will be one of tin best Saratogians have seen in years The people of Saratoga aiv doing all in their power both in the matter of laying out money and preparing the town for the reception of the race followers and I am sure they will not be dlsa ointfd in their returns returnsit it seems to me that the future of racing in New York State rests in the success or failure of the Saratoga meeting this year We are going to do all we can to make it a success Of course the law will be strictly enforced in the matter of bookmaking but there will be no heeltracing methods used and so long as there are no flagrant violations of the antibetting laws sjiort followers will not be molested In fact any one who at ¬ tempts to interfere with the sH rt unless he has strong reasons for so doing will Ijnd himself mighty unpopular in tills village
