LOUISVILLE TRAINERS SHOWING ACTIVITY Louisville Ky August 12 Many horses worked at Churchill Downs and Douglas Park yesterday Trainer C W Carroll had out almost all of the horses In the big string of A B Sprockets and the twoyearolds Galar and Maiisou went a half in close to 51 while Ambrla Jaltl Hoenir Gopula and Glymer all went at about a 200 gait All of the Spreckels horses are looking good and training well wellTrainer Trainer W S Hopkins worked G T Longs Ma delle Solicitor Rodondo Dryad and Clarabella He had two sets of the yearlings owned by Long out in groups of five and they were cantered around the course At present they appear to bo about as promising a collection of yearlings as has come from the Bashford Manor Farm In several seasons seasonsTrainer Trainer Babe Hurd worked M B timbers McGee Gunwad colt aii eighth in 14 and this slash Ing youngster went through his performance as if he could have handily beaten 12 had his rider driven him out outDan Dan Lehan did some work with his horses all on the slow order with the exception of Bronzewing which went fiveeighths faster than a 200 clip and Casey Jones which breezed a mile at about the same gait The latter could not look better than he does at present and he seems right now to possess all the speed that has put him in the first fiight of sprinters developed this season seasonGay Gay Bird Solar Star Prince Hermis and Sam Hirsch were among the performers that wore breezed at Douglas Park in the afternoon at about a 200 gait All looked good under the saddle and with a little hard training will be ready to show their best efforts during the early part of the Ken ¬ tucky fall racing season seasonThe The management at Churchill Downs feels some elation over the fact that the three most Important Derby winners of the present racing season Done rail Gowell and Buskin have all been entered for the 15000 fourmile Kentucky Endurance Stakes Donerail won the Kentucky Derby Gowell captured tlie Latnnia Derby and Buskin was successful in the Canadian Derby The Kentucky State Racing Com ¬ mission have again awarded the manufacturing of the 1000 gold cun which is donated by the com ¬ mission for the winner of this race to Tiffany Co and it will be of a design similar to the trophies awarded to the previous winners of this big race Messenger Boy and Sotcmla As soon as the cup Is finished it will be placed ou exhibition in one of the Fourth Avenue store windows here Jo remain until the big race is run ou Wednesday Oc ¬ tober 8 In the opinion of a number of horsemen the Endurance Stakes will again be won this season as it was in its inaugural year by a threeyearold This conclusion is based on the fact that such su ¬ perior performers of tills ago as Donerail Gowel Helios and Buskin have already been named by their nominators to run in this rich event Nominators have until September C to name their entries and it is likely thev will embrace all of the other three yearolds training in this country and regarded as good enough to compete In a race of this character characterJoseph Joseph W Pugh who has just been nominated by the Kenton County Democracy for sheriff is one of the staunchest friends racing has in the commonwealth When he was chief of police of Covlngton he owmd and raced a number of noted horses such as Uledi and the celebrated cam ¬ paigner Goldproof When Stone Street won the Kentucky Derby in 1908 he was trained in Pughs stable bv the late John Hall Pughs advent In racing was peculiar One morning his duties called him to the lutouia track where he met Hall Hall called Pughs attention to a filly then working on the track and remarked that she could be Iwnght for 350 and was sure to win a race Pugh put his hand in his pocket and dug up the 350 for Hall and said to him Dont bother me about that mare until you think she can win a race At Latonia that season Hall got the filly ready and sent for Pngh to see her run Hall said nothing to Pugh about backing his filly but as soon as Pngh reached the course he began betting on his entry At first lie got good odds but the price tightened and the filly went to the post at i to 1 It was a nose finish but Pughs filly was in front and be won a mnnll fortune Handing Hall a roll of bills Pugh walked away and observed Old trainer you now own a real mare Not long after this Pugh staked Hall to several other horses and as they proved successful he ultimately became the owner of quite a racing string Hall died several years ago while training some horses for C E Hamilton at Douglas Park Since then Pugh has raced no horses horsesImprovements Improvements are in progress at the stabling quarters at Churchill Downs For the first time on any of the big Kentucky tracks the stalls at the Downs have been whitewashed inside and outside All have been disinfected and the chances of a horse contracting disease In the Downs stables will thereby be lessened Another improvement is the moving back of the kitchens from the stables all of which are now in a straight line As a result the space heretofore devoted to them will serve as a drive way around the barns When completed these improvements will add decidedly to the picturesque surroundings at Churchill Downs Painters have Itegun to decorate the grandstand and clubhouse Over at Douglas Park costly Improvements are also under way Patrons of racing when they go to the IjOnisville courses this fall will behold altera ¬ tions that will not only be pleasing to the eye but will add to the comfort of all
