BRILLIANT CAREER OF A GREAT AMERICAN RACE HORSE IN ENGLISH RACING. -f- Xo thoroughbred of recent years lias made a greater impression in our racing than did the splendid Whisk lirooin II. last year. It is a matter for real regret that an accident disabled him and enforced his retirement from racing to the stud, else he would have been sure to supplement his striking succession of triumphs in the Metropolitan, Urooklyn and Suburban handicaps, with other displays of the superb speed and ability to carry great weight that so endeared him to the race-going public of Xew York in his short but 1 cessively brilliant career in this country. The major portion of his racing was done in England, where, for several years, he ranked with the best horses in training. It was his misfortune there to be the same age as the superior horses Lemberg and Xeil ;;jw, a circumstance that prevented him from having his name enrolled in the list of winners of the Two Thousand Guineas. There, when a two-year-old in 1U0O, he started in live races, of which ho won one and was second in two. His first start was in the Holiday Stakes at Sandown Park, in which lie ran unplaced to .Mount Felix, I51ue Diazes and the Cyllene The Gorgon filly. Ilis next start was in the ,000 Duke of York Plate at York, August 24. This he won by two lengths from Gaiatine, Woolacoinbe and seven more good wo-year-olds. Then he ran unplaced to Xell Gow, Admiral Hawke and Lemberg in the Champagne Stakes ;:t Ihnieastcr and could have been third had not "Skeets" Martin eased him up when it was certain he could m. t win. In the Middle Park Plate at Xewmarket, sometimes called "The Two-Year-Old Derby," he ran a great race and was only beaten a neck by Lemberg, with Admiral Hawke third and live more unplaced. His last race that year was for the Dewlmist Plate at seven-eighths of a mile and, with only the two starting, 1-eniberg beat liim easily. Good as he was, both Lemberg and Xeil Gow were better and so they continued . hen three-year-olds in 1010. That year Whisk Kroom II. began by running second to Xeil Gow for the Craven Stakes at the Xewmarket Craven meeting over the Rowley Mile. Xeil Gow beat him easily, but he beat the exceedingly speedy Tressady for second place, three others starting. His next start was in the Two Thousand Guineas April 27. and at the end of a memorable struggle Xeil Gow won by a head from Lemberg, with Whisk Broom II. a jrood third two lengths back, such good ones as Admiral Hawke, Tressady, Rochester and ISronzino being in Hie unplaced division. Such form spoke for itself, so when ho made his appearance in the Trial Stakes over tbe Hunt Cup Course on the first day of the Ascot meeting he went to the post a 1 to : favorite and von in a canter, with the famous Dean Swift second and Yellow Slave third. Then he ran unplaced in the i;ch Hardwicke Stakes at a niFe and a half, Lord Derbys great colt Swynford winning, with Marajax second and Sanctuary third. He carried fourteen pounds more than Swynford. which subsequently won the Don-caster St. I.eger of that year, with the Derby winner, Lemberg. third. Xext in the Knowsley Dinner Stakes of a mile and a quarter at Liverpool, he gave the famous colt Willonyx four pounds and ran him to a head. Mr. Kelmonts .Merry Task finishing third. At the Xewmarket Second October meeting he easily defeated Dean Swift and St. Crispin in the Select Stakes, but found the winning of the Cambridgeshire too mncli for hiin. although he went to the post a V to 1 favorite in a lield of twenty-one horses. He carried 110 pounds ami finished fourth to Christmas Daisy, .114, Mustapha, US and Halcyon, 109. That terminated his career as a three-year-old and a proved good one he was. As a four-year-old Whisk Kroom II. started in five races and won two. Ho began the year by running unplaced to Spanish Prince, a horse of grand speed. Orphali and Golden Rod in the Victoria Cup at Hurst Park. He carried 117 pounds to 112 on Spanish Prince, 101 on Orphah and 110 on Golden Rod. This race tcok place April 20. Ilis next start was at Manchester June 10 in the Salford Jjorough Handicap at three-quarters of a mile. lie carried 12;; pounds. The Irish colt Great Surprise, with 101 pounds up, was an odds-en favorite, lieing gifted with phenomenal speed at short distances, but Whisk Kroom II. made an example f bim and won in a canler by a length and a half. Grey Spinner third and such other fast ones as Golden Rod. Feramorz. Mint Master. Kerry and Wolfs Haven unplaced. June 27, at the Xewmarket First July r.ceting, be parried 120 pounds in the Duke of Cambridge Handicap at a mile and was beaten a head bv the tast three-yea r-od Kanneckbiirn. iv.:i pounds. Sandal. 0i pounds, was third. Such celebrities as The Story, Miuhrlgiit. Succour, Kudorus, Diamond Stud. Hayden and St. Felicicu being among those unpaced. Of these Ludorus was afterwards sent to Australia and Avon important races there. Whisk Kroom II. then ran unplaced in the $."!. MJ0 luilittfg Stakes at Sandown Park, Swynford winning, with Lemberg second and Pietri third. His last racfl!rTm! year wasin trio Pevcril of the Peak Plate at Derby September S. distance a mile. In th:s the starters were Whisk Kroom 11.. 120 liounds: Sunspot 122. Mustapha. 122. Avrshire Chelys colt, 02. Averims. 102. My Collar. 107. Kudorus, 10$. Hamerton. 101. Master Kill, S7, Sobieski. 00. Minter, 02 and Humorist 80. .Mustapha was the favorite at Hi to 1. while it was 4 to 1 against Whisk Kroom II. and 51 to 1 against, Sunspot, but in a great race and finish Whisk Kroom II. won from Sunspot by a neck, with Mustapha a good third. This was a line race won from high-c:ass opposition. The year 1012 was his last year of racing in England. The good horse had grown in the estimation of the ollicial hamlicappers until he was always heavily weighted and had to face the stillest sort of opposition, but nevertheless did not fail to acquit himself nobly. Ilis first start was in the 5,000 Great Jubilee Handicap of a mile and a quarter at ICempton Park May 11. In this he ran second, with 125 pounds up and. in doing so. defeated such stars at Mustapha, Donnifhorne, Sir Martin, Hornets Reality, Lonawand and Protestant Roy, among others, but Bachelors Hope, which afterward proved a high-class horse, had been let in at 100 pounds and easily took the race. May 2$. with 12S pounds up and ridden by I. Maher, he won Hie Victoria Cup at Hurst Park. Prince San, 104 pounds, finishing second and Eton Roy. Ill pounds, third. Spanish Prince had beaten him in this event the year previous, but Whisk Kroom II. took ample revenge t;ii this occasion. Spanish Prince. 127 pounds, being in the also ran division along with Great Surprise, Uncle Pat. Kraxted and other fast ones. For the Rural Hunt Cup at Ascot one of the hardest races to win in England, ho was given the steadying impost of 1.,:; pounds and. getting away badP- and interfered with, had no chance, but ran the best race of any of the twenty-eight, horses starting and finished sixth. Another great horse. Long Set. with l-!0 pounds up, had better luck and finished second, but the race fell to the four-year-old Eton Koy. 10S pounds, his success meaning the pulling off of a great betting coup. This race was run June li and Whsk Kroom II. did not run again until October 4 at the Xewmarket First Octolier meeting, when he was sent to the post for the Suailwell Stakes and. finding no opjiosition, had a walkover. At the Xewmarket Second October meeting, with each carrying i:2 pounds, he engaged in a tremendous duel witli Long Set in the Select Stakes at a miie and was beaten a short head the French-bred crack, one of the best horses of recent years in England. IIS last race of the year and his last in England, was in the ambriugesliire Handicap. The track was about as bad as it could be and. having up ISO pounds, his chance was held to be so forlorn that he was at .".i to 1 in the betting, but finished fourth or fifth, there was considerable controversy over the point, and was beaten but little over two lengths, the race falling to mother American-bred in Adam P.ede. which carried 110 pounds. The l-rench mare. La Koheme, 10S jwunds, was second, with Drill more. 100 pounds, third. The revival of racing in Xew York last .rear led Mr. Whitney to bring home a contingent from his stable in England and Whisk Kroom II. was one of them. His brief, hut glorious career last year has been so fre-uently described in Daily Racing Form as to need no recapitulation here. Suffice it to say that he only started in the three races named and won them all. The record and pedigree of tins great son of Broomstick and Audience are as follows: Year -e- Sts. 1st. 2nd. 3rd.
