DECLINE FINALLY HALTED SHRINKAGE OF AMERICAN THOROUGHBREDS ENDED FOR TIME BEING AT LEAST. Practically as Many in Action on Recognized Courses of United States, Canada and Mexico as in the Preceding Year. The recognized thoroughbred racing of 1913 in the United States, Canada and Mexico was participated in by 3,511 horses. 2.717 of which had more or less of a share in the distribution of stake and purse money. This represents a trifling decrease iu the number of horses raced as compared with the previous year, and is a showing which is taken to mean that the constant shrinkage in the numerical strength of racing thoroughbreds in North America which marked the racing of the last few years has been halted. This shrinkage, which may have reached its culmination in the year recently ended, came as a natural result of the curtailment of thoroughbred breeding from oue end of the land o the other because of legislation adverse to raclug m various parts of the United States during the three or four years beginning with 1905. It was in the latter year that the high water mark was reached with respect to the number of horses engaged in racing in the United States and Canala. From that time on the number has gradually grown less and less. The figures showing the number of thoroughbreds that have raced over the recognized tracks of North America iu each year since 1900 are embraced iu the following tabulation: Year. IHbrses. Year.
