KENTUCKY DERBY ENTRIES TO CLOSE. For the first time in its long history the Kentucky Derby is to have an endowment in keeping with the dignity and sentimental importance of the race. In its first running in 1S75 its added money was .O00, which was all very well for those days. That year such a subsequently rich event as the Relmont Stakes only had ,500 added, and 110 othur t stake race for three-year-olds in this country had J more than that sum added. Rut circumstances s have changed vastly since the first Kentucky Derby was won by Aristides. The country is prosperous and : the richest on earth, and with the New Louisville Jockey Club sharing abundantly in that wealth, its action in adding 0,000 to the Derby of this year is -entirely in accordance with its duty to fittingly recognize the abundant patronage that has been awarded it. It. does not incur the slightest risk by doubling the added money and pleasing horsemen and the public alike. It is the public that will pay the 1 increase at the gate and be glad to do it. This historic event will close for entries at mid- J night of next Monday. March 2. as will also the Kentucky Oaks, Clark Handicap. Frank Fehr Stak -s, Rashford .Manor Stakes, Debutante Stakes and .Tu- venile Stakes. The conditions of all are displayed in the advertising department of this issue of Daily Racing Form and also should receive a record list of nominations. The extent to whieli the Derby will j now attract entries from eastern owners is a point cf j decided interest. If Pennant should be entered it 1 will be a pleasing happening. ;
