THE SPEED OF OLD ROSEBUD. Without going so far as lo say that Old Rosebud is the best horse I have ever seen, which be is not. yet one may go to tbe races lor a generation without seeing duplicated what be showed in the way of speed on Saturday. It rained in a drizzling ami dreary way all day Friday in Louisville, aad in the real way that night, so that lb ■ morning papers regretfully announced that "the Derby will be run in a sea of mud." IL wasnt, but one may readily uniHerstanil that it was not run over a fast track." in spite of the improvement worked by the bright, warm skies of Saturday morning. Yet Old itoaebad went a mile over it galloping a couple of lengths in front of the laboring half dozen behind him in 1:9B%. There was still a quarter of a mile to go before earning the ..12." that Uas il in- to tin- first horse. The others were nol near him. and could not get near him. They had doue their best, while the leader was never urged. But he slackened elf not at all. Tbat last quarter he ran in 33% seconds, a rale of speed that few horses are callable of at most times, and possessed by not one in a thousand alter running lie better than 1:40. This was the outslanding feature of Old Boaebads Derby victory, aad tin- climax of a display of Immense superiority over bis opponents. bulge is a gallant little botae and was equally the master of those behind him. but be will Bead much ad antage in the way of weight and other assisting eruditions before he can conquer the one thai wain front of him all the way on this occasion. Old Rosebud wa- bred by J. B. Madden, and practically thrown in wifh a batch of yearlings thai Applegate and Company hosarht from him a couple of seasons ago. On Saturday Mr. Maddens best representative, the filly Warermelon. tailed hopelessly along a iaaea lengths behind the gelding that be practically gave away. And yet they -ay you can pick tbe best yearlings on their looks: Old Rosebud is by the Star Shoot horse. 1 ncle. and his dam. Ivory Bells, is a daughter of Hitnyar and Ida IMckwick. -Francis Nelson in Toronto Glebe.
