EUROPEAN WAR DEVELOPMENTS The British admiralty has admitted that seven merchant vessels heretofore not announced had been torpedod by German submarines since Thurs ¬ day Two tif these it is stated were sunk and of tvo others it is said that the sinking is not con lirmed Three were damaged but not sunk The statement issued by the admiralty accounts for the following named vessels Steamer Ilartdale sunk by submarine in Irisli channel Saturday three of crew drowned twentynine others saved The In ¬ dian City a small steamer sunk off the Scilly is ¬ lands Friday the crew was picked up by nearby steamers The steamer Adeiiwan 79S tons of Cardiff torpedoed in the channel on Thursday it readied Cherbourg with its crew The steamer Florizan 4i 8 tons of Liverpool torpedoed or mined Thursday at the mouth of Bristol channel crew safe The steamer Headlands 29SS tons of Liverpool torpedced Friday off the Scilly islands crew safe The steamer Andalusian torpedoed off tlie Scilly islands on Friday crew safe The steamer Inversyle 1794 tons of Glasgow torpedoed off Cresswell Saturday crew safe safeParis Paris reports that French and British battleships are continuing their bombardment of the Darda ¬ nelles forts Seventy small mine sweepers are con ¬ tinuing their efforts t tr r clear the mine lields and are under a continuous rain of iron from the Turkish short batteries Some of the sweepers have been damaged According to the latest dispatches from the Dardanelles the allied licet has not penetrated the straits as far as previously had been reported Iniitlicial dispatches had the licet many miles up the straits but an oliicial communication from the French ministry of marine shows the reports to be untrue Previous Information has been to tlie effect that Chanak Kalessl and other forts at the narrow ¬ est parts of the straits had been bombarded success ¬ fully that about a third of the passage had been cleared of mines and that some of the more im ¬ portant batteries at
