WHAT LAST YEARS LATONIA DERBY WINNER HAS DONE DONEIN IN RACING John Guild is a downright good colt and no better Latonla Derby was ever run than lie put to his credit last year Then and there lie proved himself a true stayer as he has every right to lie when his ancestry is considered Through his dam he is probably as close to the famous St Lcger winner of 1S 4 Touchstone as any horse living He is a grandson of Kyrle Daly and Kyrle Daly was a grandson of Touchstone Kyrle Italy was bought and imported to this country by John Keber of Lancaster Ohio and sired good stock Uebers descentAs main reason for buying him was his close approach to Touchstone in descent As a twoyearold John Guild developed slowly and did not win a race until the fall meeting at Lex ¬ ington arrived Previously lie had been beaten In seven races of which he had been placed in but three ills first race did not hold out much promise It was in a luilfmilfe dasli for a purse at Lexington April 20 1S1 in which he finished last of nine starters Little Nephew winning from Harwood and Brigs Brother in 40 over a heavy track In his next race he was unplaced to Uoamer Destino and Tictok at four and a half furlongs in 55 but was knocked out of any chance at the start May li he did better when lie finished fourth to Magnet Dr Samuel and The Norman beaten a length and two heads at liveeighths of a mile in 102 Still on the upgrade he mounted higher when on May S lie ran second to Imperator in the Breeders Fntutrity at fiveeighths In 100 There were fourteen starters In this race and he showed good form in finishing where he did after being tenth away from the post but Iiujterator won easily by six lengths Urigs Itrother liulshed third His next start was at Douglas Park May 2S in a race for maidens at at the same distance and in heavy going he won from David Craig Claxonette Sosius Just Y Brigs Brother May L and Bolala In 111 it iKing a good race on his part Then without hav ¬ ing achieved much of a reputation lie ran his last race of the year on November 5 and ran third to Black Toney and Maud B L at threequarters of a mile in 115 By 115By way of coincidence John Guild finished last In his first race as a threexearold just as lie had done in his lirst race as a twoyearold This was in a threequarters sprint over a heavy track at Lexington April 27 which Hawthorn won in 111 with Sosius second and Miss Thorpe third May 2 he gave a broad hint that an improved John Gund was to be reckoned with when in the Blue Crass Stakes ar a mile and mi eighth the fine filly Bronzewing only beat him by a nose in such fast time as 151 if with Old Icn a bad third five lengths away while Surprisng Sosius and Milton lloblee ran unplaced Colts carried 122 pounds geldings 11 and fillies 117 His next
