URGE EXPORT DUTY ON MARES Horse lireediug cir ¬ cles in England have lien advised that an Ameri ¬ can syndicate is lieing formed to purchase in Kng ¬ land u large number of thoroiighbre 1 mares and lillies The Koard of Agricutnre wl en arranging for tin return of thoroughbred ma es from the seat of war stipulated that they si otild l e used for breeding and must not lie exp rted Horse dealers urge that the principle should be extended to all mares whether thoroughbred or not which IHISS the veterinary examination The reasons of ¬ fered for ths proposed regulation are that horses are at present contraband of war but it is claimed that export licenses can be too easily obtained from the war trade department The principal argument advanced for continuing horse racing lias been the effect on the breed of horses but this argument will be nullified if export is not more strictly checked Many breeders urge the imposi ¬ tion of an export duty Others go farther and demand that the Koard of Agriculture shall pro ¬ hibit tlif cxiHirtation of wares for the next de ¬ cade Otherwise they see no chance of Englands recouping her equine losses sustained during the war
